Razorbacks oust Rebels in title game The Razorbacks won the midget championship Saturday afternoon, eking out a 52-50 win over the Rebels in the 11 and 12 year old division of the Perry Recreation Department basketball league. The Backs and the Rebels played a very even game. At halftime, the Razorbacks held a slim 27-25 lead. But the Rebels, behind eight third quarter points from Andrew Scogin and six from Will Sexton, outscored the 'Backs 16-13 in the third to go into the final quarter leading by a point. But the Razorbacks would not be denied. Jammey Barrett scored a game-high 29 points and the 'Backs held on to the championship after a solid regular season which saw them lose only once. To get to the championship, the 'Backs had to play the Wildcats earlier that afternoon, churning out a 41-31 win. Barrett led all scorers with 16 points. F. Ryan added 14 for the 'Backs. Kas Asbury had 10 points in a losing cause. The Rebels advanced with a 45- 40 win over the Gators. Scogin was a chief part, scoring 26 points. Cedric Clark had 14 in his last game for the Gators. Baseball, from 1 b Perry’s hitters also struggled at the plate, striking out 10 times in the game. Every starter except shortstop Jason Brett struck out at least once in the contest Hornets, from 1 b a 35-mile journey to Tattnall Square Academy, a school where they have already played five games this year, winning three of them. Meanwhile, Brookwood, which is based to the south in Thomasville, will have to travel about 150 miles to play and that's just the opening round. Massey said that his goal this week in practice was to return the Hornets to playing aggressive defense. Westfield stayed within shouting distance of Athens in the championship before faltering in the fourth quarter. Earnest Howard led the Tigers with 12 points, while Stephen Baxter added six. Dustin Rainey led the Bulldogs with nine points. In the mighty division, regular season play ended Saturday with the Heat taking a 26-15 win over the Pistons. Bubba Blalock scored eight points for the Heat, while Kyle McCarty added six. Damien Singletary had eight points in a losing cause for the Pistons. The Celtics were able to survive the Lakers by a 24-17 score. Jai Bowens led all scorers with 12 points for the Celtics. Robert Bullard had eight points for the Lakers. There was also some junior league play Saturday, with the Aggies losing again to the Trojans 47-41. Jason Glover had 19 points for the victorious Trojans, while Anthony Mord added 10. Meanwhile, the Bruins wrapped up Saturday's play with a thrilling 76-75 win over the Huskies. Quincy Stephens scored an incredible 42 points for the winners. Trey Wilder tried to keep his team close with 34, but it wasn't enough. The Panthers' only real opportunity came in the First. With two outs, Brett walked and stole second. But Waldrip fanned, leaving Brett stranded as the only runner who reached second. "We’ve got to get back to playing good fundamental defense," Massey said. "We've made a few mistakes lately, but we’ve been able to overcome it with our offense." Westfield will also have to hope the free-throw shooting of Friday was just a one-night stand. The Hornets made just five of 22 tosses from the charity stripe, after impressive performances in the latter part of the season. If Westfield wins, it will face the winner of the Stratford-Edmund Burke game Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Tattnall. Region, from 1 b teams during the regular season. Meanwhile, the Perry boys get a chance to sit back and rest after an emotional win over Peach County Friday night. The GHSA's third ranked team in Class AAA knocked off the fifth-ranked Trojans twice in a week, a good tune-up for the region, and hopefully state play, according to coach Carl Thomas. But after a lackluster week of practice going into the Peach County game, Perry finds itself amidst disruption this week. The Panthers practiced Monday afternoon, after spending the entire day at home with the Presidents' Day holiday. Perry will also find its practice schedule cut by the tournament play, which begins at 5:30 p.m. today and Thursday and 4 1994 GHSA 2-AAA Tournament Perry, GA Boys Bracket Thursday Friday Saturday (3) Wayne County 6:30 p.m. (6) Appling County 5:30 p.m. (2) Dodge County 5:00 p.m. (7) Fitzgerald 8:30 p.m. Champion (4) Jones County 8:00 p.m. (5) Ware County 8:30 p.m. (1) Perry We Go All Out k/ Good Now Thru feL Feb. 28 Jfl Honey Parquet Flooring sll9 , i sq.ft. But Thomas said that the Panthers must overcome the distractions. "I thought that maybe we were a little flat last week," Thomas said. "It was almost a hangover type effect. We spent a lot of our practice time running sprints." Perry will be going after its first tournament title in Thomas' six years as head coach. But the Panthers remember all too well last year's scenario. Perry won the regular season but had to play the tournament at Dodge County, which had the regular season girls champion. The Panthers made it to the finals but were stunned by a fired-up Dodge club in the championship. To Help You Save Money WARNER ROBINS LJ SUPPLYco. "It's the one achievement within the region that [we] do not have," Thomas said. Perry will play the winner of the Ware County-Jones County game Friday night at 8:30 p.m. The Panthers have outscored the two opponents in four games 366-216, an average victory margin of 38 points. A win would place the Panthers into Saturday night's 8:30 championship and give them an automatic bid to the state playoffs.
