Heard's Dedication To Pigs Pays Off At Yearly Market By PAULINE LEWIS Staff Writer With the help of his good neigh bor, Mr. O.C. Powell, DeWayne Heard has raised three fine hogs. He has named them O.C. for Mr. Powell, Sid, for Sid Bledsoe, and Little Bit, because she was the smallest of the three. O.C. tips the scales at 255, Sid at 245 and Little Bit at 227. Heard fed them Purina feeds - 16 percent and 20 percent protein. He borrowed the money from his grandfather, Robert Heard, to buy the pigs on November 15. “When I sell the pigs, I will pay him back,” DeWayne said. Son of Sonny and Brenda Heard, DeWayne is an almost-13 year-old seventh grader at Perry Middle School and is an enthusiastic 4-H Club member. DeWayne would like to attend the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and become a veterinar ian when he grows up. This is his second year in a pig raising project. Mr. O.C. Powell let him use a 50x50-foot lot en closed with page wire and two strands of barbwire at the top and with strong wooden double gates. It has a 12x20-foot concrete block building with a lean-to. DeWayne keeps feed stored in iL Three generations of the Heards ran a 500-foot water line and stand pipe to get water to the lot. DeWayne will be taking his three not-so-little pigs to the Agricenter on Saturday to the Young Farmers’ Show. The Young Farmers help youth by putting on a show, raising SCASHS Will Be Accepted money by having dove shoots and getting merchants to buy the pigs at above the going rate at an auc tion. This is the businessmen’s way of helping youth break even with raising the pigs. DeWayne said “It’s real fun. A lot of people should get into it. Try it one time and you’ll probably like it.” He advises students to get into 4- H. “It teaches you responsibility, helps you in math skills and sciences, and helps you to like an imals. “I get up at five o’clock in the morning and come down to check the pigs and work them 30 minutes to one hour with a show stick to get them ready for the show.” That’s real dedication!
