Like shows that investigate consumer issues without bothering to present an opposite viewpoint Or ones that take statements out of context I'm talking about the recent 20/20 program carrying the underlying message that chiropractic care for children is at best ridiculous. It also led viewers to believe that this is a new marketing scheme devised by chiropractors who are running out of adult patients and are now targeting children. Wrong on both counts. Chiropractors have always worked with children. And they've also always recognized how important spinal care is to little ones. For example, nearly 100 years ago, chiropractors understood what the medical profession finally labeled "whiplash shake syndrome." this condition occurs when the baby is severely shaken (either in play or abuse) can cause eye or brain damage, blindness, paralysis or convulsions. Now that it has an official name, the medical establishment says it's real, but chiropractors have been saying the whole time that children have delicate spines. Jumping, running and falling are all part of a normal childhood, yet these activities can cause spinal misalignment and nerve damage with serious consequence. Using forceps or dangling the baby by the feet may damage a newborn's spine. Such misalignments of the spinal vertebrae may then show up in common pediatric problems such as headaches, bedwetting, constipation, asthma, lack of appetite or inability to sleep through the night. Many times the parents may not even tell me about these conditions at first. They've brought in their child because of a fall or sports injury. I believe that is a disservice to parents who are concerned about their child's health. I'm also distrubed that when the media cover chiropractic the last word always lies with someone outside the profession. The ultimate bottom line—and the one ignored-is: Are children reaping the results? Parents, you would not think of neglecting your children's teeth, eyes or ears. Don't neglect their spine either. They need a checkup immediately after birth and then once a year thereafter. It may be among the most important checkups your child will ever have.
