The bUI passed by the Georgia General Assembly, and soon to be signed into law by Governor Zell Miller, will raise the state's maximum weekly unemployment check by $lO, from $lB5 to $195, effective July 1. There will be another $lO per week increase on July 1,1995. The measure will also save money for businessmen by cutting their unemployment taxes by 6.25 percent. "Unemployed workers in Georgia haven't had an increase in their insurance benefits in four years, even though the cost of living has gone up steadily during that time," Poythress said. "We're fortunate we can help them and give employers a tax break without putting a strain on the unemployment insurance trust fund.” Georgia's sl-billion-plus unemployment insurance trust fund is the nation's eighth largest. It earned nearly $74-million in interest in 1993, for a return of better than seven percent. In sharp contrast, the state ranks 42nd in the amount of benefits paid to unemployed workers. While the maximum weekly benefit i Georgia has been $lB5 per week, the national average is $249.84. The measure, sponsored by State Representative Roy H. "Sonny" Watson, of Warner Robins, also imposes one percent-per-month interest on unemployment insurance benefits received MDraGGiRSSii Truck roundoP m~r~~ 1 Power-ass^^^\ rakes /reardnHii l || J • v»v#v*\vWWVtWWWW*WiiWWW«WW.WWvXv. . . ,• •.*.• • • • • *» w « w * w » w > w » w » w They’re 810... they’re POWERFUL,., and they’re headin’ to your nearest Dodge Dealer.
