Letters, from 4A- will be completed, hopefully, in time for the fall of *95 school year. Sonic have suggested we build a new school in Perry and use the pre sent Perry Middle School building for some other purpose. I think from the above described conditions you understand we can't do that It would be financially irresponsible to close a school that is structurally sound and in the geographical center of the population it serves. I hope this helps you understand our situation and efforts to better the school facilities of our students in Houston County. Thank you for your understanding, involvement and support. Sincerely, Zell S. Blackmon Jr. Houston County Board of Education Truitt upset with newspaper's 'refusal' Dear Editor: At 3:08 p.m., today, March 4,1994, Mr. Jim Kerce, managing editor, The Daily Sun, informed me that he is refusing to allow me to re spond to Mrs. Norris' vituperative and mendacious "ad hominem" diatribe that appeared on the front page of The Daily Sun, March 3,1994. It is most regrettable that The Daily Sun continues to publish with the same partisan journalism that so distinguished The Daily Sun during the administration of jailed Warner Robins Mayor Ed Marlin. Richard A. Truitt, Jr. (Editor's Note: The following letter and poem have been submitted in memory of Giles Webb from his family and friends.) In Memory Of Daddy And PaPa As we here on this earth mourn you leaving us Daddy, I know the gates of heaven opened wide, the angels stood proud, held their heads a little higher and rejoiced as never before to welcome such a great man as you into your new home. Finally you have the eternal love, life and peace that you so richly deserve. You now have your new tomorrow. A unique creation, yes you were and still are. I feel as though I can reach and touch you, as if you are still here. I remember as if it were yes terday, your hands, your voice your smile and your eyes; not a word need be spoken, I knew how you felt "Take care of my babies", the last words you spoke to me. "Yes sir", I said. You know I will, you know we will. We will try not to let you down. Your buddy misses you, we all miss you. We love you. Through our pain and our sorrow, with the hopes and dreams of our new tomorrow, we will never let you part, for you are always in our * iearts> We love you, Abbie, Tommy, Beverly, Evie, John, Scott, Lil Tommy, Nicole Wright I Remember Major Giles Webb The Earth is the Lord's, including the World and all who dwell therein. He watches over all and fashions their hearts and sees their good deeds. 11l give you this special man, He said, for you to love and respect while he lives, It may be ten or more years so will you take care of him for me until I call him back. He's been a real Trooper, a good husband, father and grandfather, And though his stay might seem brief, you'll always have loving memories of this good man. All cm Earth must return, so don't be angry when I call to take him back, because he served me well and was a good man for all. Now that his work is done, it's time to end what God began. I had started the newspaper in Warner Robins. I had worked 24 years without a real vacation. I had the mistaken idea that I had to be there all the time, that it would not run without me. The pressures built up. There were many obligations to fulfill. Many meetings to attend. Personnel problems. So many things. I convinced myself that I needed a change. And when I was offered an opportunity to sell and retire I jumped at the chance. Like most people, I had a vision of retirement as the ultimate accomplishment. It wasn't long before I realized that retirement isn't what it is cracked up to be. For someone accustomed to going to work everyday and spending long hours on the job it was boring. Finding something to do to keep from wasting away be came real work. You can only play so much golf, read so many books. I looked back at the time I had spent doing a job that I really had enjoyed and I realized that I had talked myself into believing getting out was the answer. I realized that if I had sat back and thought everything through I would have been better off and happier doing what I did best, despite all the problems that went with it. * * * MY OWN experiences make me hope that before our Sam Nunn makes a decision to give up his seat in the senate he will think, long and hard, about what he would be giving up...and make sure it is re ally what he wants to do for the rest of his life. Undoubtedly there are many major corporations that would pay a hefty sum to get Sam to become CEO. But would he be happy influencing the fortunes of one company when he could influence the future of our country as a senior senator? Think about it, friend. Recycling, from QA Although Houston County does not qualify for the tax credits, the proposed bill would allow counties to form developmental alliances. If a county was eligible for a tax credit of $2,000, then every county in the alliance would be eligible for the credit Martin said Houston County could form an alliance with Dooly County, for instance, which would allow Houston to receive the $2,000 tax credit He added that de tails in the bill still remained to be worked out meeting. Along those lines the newspaper received a call from the manager of the local McDonald's. We recently printed a letter to the editor from a tobacco information committee concerning McDonald's banning smoking in their restaurants. We've been informed since, that not all McDonald's have banned smoking, only a small percentage. The Perry McDonald's still has a smoking section. Anyone who has a concern on such issues can contact me on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. I may not always have an an swer, but I can try and help. Also, if you have a solution to any concerns I mention in columns that are brought to my attention, please let me know. I will pass them along to the original caller. Perry is a great place and by working together we can keep it that way and, maybe, even make it better. Blackmon also defended the board's going into executive session to name schools after former Hous ton County educators, stating that the personnel record of potential honorees were discussed. Georgia sunshine laws allow a government body to go into execu tive or closed sessions to discuss personnel matters. Blackmon said the school board went into execu tive session to protect the "rights" of those being considered for a school, building or room name. Blackmon also said that he had talked to one of the writers of the sunshine law, Foy Evans, who indicated that he believed the school board had taken the correct position. page 11A
