Golden Opportunity Offered To Seniors BY BRENDA THOMPSON ~ Staff Writer Growing older doesn't have to mean losing one's independence. It doesn’t have to mean being lost in the crowd or getting wrapped up in the red tape and complexities of the Medicare system. It doesn’t have to mean an end to learning or anything else as far as that goes. It doesn't have to mean any of those things, according to Glennda Gandy, coordinator of a senior ser vices community outreach program for the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon and guest speaker at last week’s meeting of the Perry Exchange Club. “There are so many services available to senior citizens in our state. Unfortunately, as is the case so many times, they just don’t know about them or they get frus trated trying to find them-getting shifted from office to office until they finally just give up,” Gandy told local Exchange Qub members. “What we do is answer the ques tions we can answer and find the answers to those we can’t-whatever it takes to get these folks the help they so desperately need.” Better known to many as “Golden Opportunities-Seniors Helping Seniors”, Gandy says MCCG’s outreach program is a non-profit service which is avail able to all senior citizens living in Houston, Bibb and 37 other Central Georgia counties considered to be within the hospital’s primary ser vice area. Since its creation several years ago, the primary purpose of Golden Opportunities has been to assist older citizens in achieving a better quality of life. It reaches this goal by combining the expertise and ex perience of professional staff and senior volunteers. A council of se niors over age 65 help coordinate, tailor and conduct many of the program’s services.
