Recycle, A Small Gift To The Earth! Purple Martins Need Our Help Purple martins are the most popular member of the swallow family. Winter residents of South America, martins appear here in Georgia in late February or early March. They are cheerful birds that spend their summer days perching on wires or canvassing the airways in search of flying insects. As guardians of the poultry yard, martins also defend their territory against hawks and crows. Martins eat butterflies, grasshoppers, houseflies and drag onflies. Although martins feed on flying insects, their ability to con trol mosquitoes has been overrated. Studies have shown that most mosquitoes are active at twilight or night, since martins look for food from dawn to dusk, mosquitoes are only available to them at sunrise Successful Boat Shopping Means Planning When the weather becomes too cold for fishing, cruising and water skiing, many boaters head for the comfort of winter boat shows. Walking a show floor to find a new boat can be almost as fun as boating itself, and those who "chart their course" before cruising these elaborate maritime displays will find the right boat at the right price. Successful boat shopping begins at home. "Before even attending a boat show, determine exactly what you want in your boat," said Gene Eiler, dealer development manager for Yamaha Marine. "Gather the whole family and find out who wants to water-ski, how many people are into fishing and whether or not the family plans any overnight cruises. Once you’ve decided which activities are most important, you’re half way io determining which boat you want So buy." 1 Use the family discussion to develop a list of boat specifications that are considered most important, mark each feature as a "must have" or a "can do without," and leave space after each item for a check mark. Determine your budget, and make a space on the list to record the prices of different boats. Include additional lines for the price of motors, options, delivery charges, make-ready charges and other costs. At the show, use the index in the show program to locate exhibits with the type of boat you desire. As you look over each model, use your check-off list to make sure the boat has all the features you want, and add up the costs to see if it is within your budget. Don’t forget to ask about trade-in possibilities if you already own a boat. Many marine dealers "show specials." These boats are priced lower than their regular showroom cost, so keep an eye out for such deals. Shoppers can also save by purchasing boat packages that include motors, trailers or accessories. "A motor is usually the most costly addition to a boat, so budget conscious buyers should find a good boat-and-motor package. For example, over 40 independent boat builders sell select Yamaha marine engines. Boat manufacturers who work closely with Yamaha buy their engines at discount and pass the savings on to consumers," Eiler said. Shop around for a good dealer as well as a good boat. "The dealer who sells you a boat will be your partner to advice and Butts wins Georgia Redman Fishing Tourney Richard Butts of Opp, Ala., placed first in the Feb. 27 Red Man Bulldog Division season opener held on Lake Seminole at Wingate's.
