Headaches: It’s The Source That Matters
Migraine headaches, tension
headaches, cluster headaches. No
matter what it's called, every year
Americans lose 157 million work
days and spend more than $2 billion
on over-the-counter medicines
trying to make the pain disappear.
And that doesn't include the
enormous sums spent at the
doctor's office: More people seek
medical advice because of headaches
than any other complaint. An
entire "industry'' is built up on
stopping the symptoms of
headaches.
But the irony is, for most
people, the headaches don't go
away.
I believe the problem stems
from placing too much emphasis
on clarifying the type of headache,
rather than finding out the cause.
After a life threatening illness like
tumors has been ruled out, much
effort goes into putting a label on
the headache. There are many
names for types of headaches
depending on when they occur and
how they occur.
Compare this to calling 911
when your house is on fire.
Suppose the operator first asks if
everyone was out of the house.
Then comes the question like:
What color are the flames? What
does the smoke smell like? Which
window has the most smoke?
Knowing the answers won't put
out the fire. Nor will it tell
investigators what caused it.
It's the same thing with
headaches. Describing and talking
about them in detail rarely does
much to suggest a proper treatment.
Putting a label on a headache won't
make it go away.
Neither does taking painkillers.

The symptoms will disappear
temporarily. But the source of pain
is not being addressed. You also
run the risk of becoming addicted as
well as experiencing various
unpleasant side effects.
Conventional treatment usually
goes something like this: The
family doctor refers you to an
internist who sends you to a
neurologist After seeing three or
four doctors, (and spending money
on several expensive tests) you
finally leave with the name of your
headache-as well as the headache
itself!
Now don’t get me wrong. I'm
not saying to ignore medical
treatment Pathological headaches
such as those caused by hematomas
or tumors must be ruled out.
Although these types of headaches
make up only a tiny percentage,
you don't want to be that statistic.
What I'm saying is that for the
vast majority of headaches, the
name doesn't matter. What's
important is where they are coming
from.
Contrary to popular belief,
headaches don't come from stress.
Stressful conditions may trigger a
headache but they don't cause it.
Even the "good" kind of stress like
going on a vacation or visiting
grandchildren may bring on
headaches.
The truth is, rgost headaches are
neurogenic. That is they are caused

by nerve pressure in the cervical
root, or neck. These nerves that
run toward your shoulders and arms
also run into your head and scalp
area. Symptoms may come also
from constricted or enlarged blood
vessels, strained muscles, or poorly
functioning joints.
When a chiropractic adjustment
realigns the spine, several things
happen: Muscle spasms are
decreased, normal mobility that
promotes circulation is restored.
This, in turn, aids in the proper
nutrition of the joints and spine,
thereby decreasing irritation,
inflammation and pain.
The bottom line is the headache
-and the need for medication
lessens. In many cases, it goes
away. We usually begin to see
results with three or four visits.
This approach is documented in
several recent studies. A 1985
