Outdoors Fishing Is Not The Way It Was This is kind of a crazy way to start an article about fishing but it is fast becoming the truth. Fishing isn't as simple as it was 10 years ago or as a matter of fact it's not as simple as just a few years ago. Once upon a time, when the mood struck or a nice spring day was beckoning, a person just picked up a couple of cane poles and a can of worms or crickets and set off to the nearest pond or creek. Whatever he caught, he took home to eat and most of the time he would only bring home no more than the family could eat in one or two meals. Every so often a group would get together and catch a #2 wash tub full of fish to have a fish fry for Bpji f CT«. ]■ bHI I . jSßg| i f jffflljra :2? iWS&JKl nailer I9ft BBMr '■ %jnn]n3| ■> * '’ * ' ', - V • .-.fo The time of a simple day spent with with a cane pole on a rlyerbank are' long In the past. Spring Is Time To Plant Gardens Spring is almost officially here, and there are a lot of things to be considered by the aggressive gardener. I would like to devote this article to some of these. Azaleas need pruning attention this month. Very little pruning is needed with azaleas, however, other than routinely taking out dead or inferior wood. The ideal time to prune is while the plants are in bloom, for the pruned branches can then be used in flower arrangements indoors. When azaleas and camellias have finished blooming, they might benefit from a dose of acid fertilizer, often found under the name "Azalea and Camellia fertilizer." Generally, about 3 to 4 pounds per 100 square feet of area should be applied. Look out for petal blight of azaleas. It shows up as specks on Ga. Trout Season Will Open March 26 Seasonal trout streams are scheduled to open for fishing on Saturday, March 26, according to the Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division. Trout season runs from the last Saturday in March through October 31. Fishing hours begin thirty minutes before sunrise and ends thirty minutes after sunrise. Seasonal trout streams are closed to fishing for all fish species at all other times. There are over 4,000 miles of trout streams in Georgia. Trout fishing opportunities range from heavily stocked, high use streams to remote wilderness fishing. For the most part this is a thing of the past as it just doesn't seem that people have as much time for this type of thing anymore. It was nothing to go over to the neighbor's farm and get his permission to catch a mess of fish out of their pond or pay a dollar and fish all day. If a good stretch of the creek ran through someone else's property; there was no problem in going to the creek and fishing. The main reason we were able to do this was that we were always taught to get permission first, take care of their property and don't destroy it, and, above all, have respect of the neighbor's property. fTim L Lewis Ag. instructor, ' Perry High School I the blooms. Blooms quickly collapse as if scalded with hot water. Damage can be reduced by the application of a fine mist spraying of a common foliar fungicide such as Zineb. Daffodils are splashing the countryside with color now. If you have them in your yard, you may consider feeding them with a little bone meal (phosphorus) to ensure quality blooms next year. Be sure to let the straplike foliage die down trout anglers, many of the streams are stocked with 9-11 inch trout by the Wildlife Resources Division, Fisheries Section. Streams are slocked seasonally, monthly, or weekly depending on fishing pressure and the ability of the stream to support the fish population. Trout streams that are not designated as seasonal are open year-round for fishing. All resident anglers between the ages of 16 and 65 must have a trout stamp attached to a valid Georgia fishing license to fish in designated trout waters or to possess trout in any waters. Resident honorary license holders are not required to have a trout stamp, and landowners CZ~ Gone L % I s| David and Susanne Andel Neighbors would also help neighbors when the time came and there was an unwritten law that when in need, we helped those in need. Today’s world has long forgotten those days and I doubt we will ever see them again. Today, when you decide to go fishing you have to be sure you have the license, you’ll have to naturally after flowering is complete. Then dig, divide, and store bulbs in a cool, dry place until time to replant in the fall. Now is a good time to divide and transplant perennials such as daylilies, ajuga, oxalis, and liriope. Rework the beds, adding organic matter and fertilizer. Be planning your vegetable gardens now also. Soil preparation is critical to the success of your crops. Deep tilling, which breaks up hardpans and improves tilth and permeability, is a good pre-plant practice. Forming a fine seed bed is also very important to the germination of the planted crops. Beets, carrots, leaf lettuce, mustard, turnips, collards, kale, English peas, radishes, and related crops can be shown in March. You may even take a chance and plant an and their immediate families may fish without a license or trout stamp on their own property. Other rules to remember when trout fishing include: •Night fishing on trout streams that are only open during trout season is unlawful. Night fishing is allowed on trout streams that are open year-round and on impoundments, unless otherwise noted. •The Chattahoochee River, within the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, from Buford Dam to Peachtree Creek is closed to use 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise. They have found that the liabilities outweigh the profits and pleasure. You can forget going on your neighbor's property to get to the creek. The land most likely belongs to a cooperation or foreign group and is posted. Any way you look at it, the days of fun and simple fishing are gone. Today, the words "simple fishing" take on another meaning. The new meaning is that you must have some sort of access to a boat or friend who has one and doesn't mind taking you fishing. If you buy a boat of your own, well the meaning of simple fishing has just changed roles. You have got to register the boat, buy the required equipment just to put the boat in the water, and join the ranks of those who pull their rigs from lake to lake trying to enjoy a day of fishing. All of this is not so bad except that the government is always looking for a way to pry a little more money for their budget and the fishermen and hunters usually bear a goodly portion of the load. Right now the Congress is busy as spring bees trying to figure a way of getting some more of our money, since the recreational users tax law was repealed last year. Any way you look at it simple fishing is still simple, it's just not as simple as it used to be and it won’t get any simpler. For those of us who love to fish, we are going to find a way and means to fish. Fishing is a lot like golf, everytime the country club wants to add something new, the green fees go up or the membership dues increase. Prune raspberries and blackberries this month, while it is easy to see which canes are dead. These canes are the ones which bore the fruit last year, and they should be removed. A mulch of pine straw, hay, or wood chips will keep the berry patch easier to manage. Transplant raspberries and blackberries now. When found along meadows and the edge of the woods, be sure to dig as much root as possible as this will reduce transplant shock. Both prefer partial shade and well-drained soil, but require little attention once established. •Trotlines, set hooks, jugs, nets, bows and arrows, and all other gear except poles and lines cannot be used in trout streams. Trout anglers are restricted to the use of one pole and line which must be hand held. •Live bait fish may not be used in any trout stream. Seining of bait fish is not allowed in any trout stream. •On trout streams designated as "artificial only", only artificial lures may be used. It is unlawful to possess any other type of bait on an "artificial only" stream.
