- Saturday, March 19,1994 "Houston Times-Joumal Page 8A Westfield, from 5A the region games, we go with the kids who are producing the most. The kids seem to take region ball games, like their coach, more seri ously." Even so, Brown said the Hornets were giving up cheap runs and cheap innings. "We weren't making routine plays," he said. "We were able to do that (make routine plays) in the Monroe game and that made all the difference in the world.” The Hornets wasted no time in jumping out in front. Leadoff man Shepley singled to start the game. One out later, Nuss connected on a Monroe pitch to give Westfield the early 2-0 lead. The Hornets would add three more runs in the third to pad their lead to 5-0. Thad Hawk, batting in the nine hole, would lead the inning off with a double. Walks to Shep ley and Nuss would load the bases for the visitors. Hawk would score on a Jake Walls single. Dehem hit into a fielder's choice at second for the second out. Shepley crossed the plate for the Hornets on the play. The final run of the inning would score when Monroe misplayed a Talton grounder to short, allowing Nuss to cross the plate. The Hornets have a history this year of playing well for the first half of the game and then allowing County, from 1A night’s meeting. “At first glance, it seemed like the owner of the struc tures would be the one to pay the costs of re-location. But, after look ing into it, we know that is simply not the case. They (Oglethorpe Power Corp.) did agree, however, to allow us to pay over a four year pe riod.” Stafford added that, although this year’s installment had to be drawn from the contingency fund, the next three installments will be included in future county budgets. The West Perry Bypass, which e com ' din :!irce phases, will eventually run from Thompson Road to the west part of the city and will include a new Interstate 75 interchange at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter. Kick-off, from 1A parade. "It's a riot," said Burrus. "Animals come dressed up in cos tumes." There are six categories for the pet parade: cutest, ugliest, best cos -1 ime, best trick, largest and small est. At 3:30 p.m., there will be a basketball shooting contest for boys and girls age 15 and under. There will be four age categories, seven-and-eight-years-old, nine-and -10-ycars-old, 11 -and-12-ycars-old and 13-to-15-years-old. Participants will compete in three point shooting, free throw and sharp shooting. The cost is $1 per event. In addition to specific events, 99 WAYS Oldies will have an all-day remote from Family Fun Day. The Wrightsville, Ga., band Country Notes will perform, as will Macon ventriloquist Cliff Pat ton. Family Fun Day will conclude at 5 p.m. with a balloon release. Roley, from 4A Small businesses like the corner convenience store, like this newspa per, like the hometown furniture dealer, like the car dealer, like most, if not all, of the businesses you past today. Chances are you work in a small business. In order to get jobs, we have got to encourage small business. Unfor tunately, we seem to, by tax law and regulation, wish to drive the small business out of business. It is no small wonder, with all the govern ment mandates and taxes that have hit small business in the last few years, that we have an unemploy ment rate as low as it is. Instead of capital gains taxes on small business, we need a tax sys tem that encourages citizens with a modest amount of wealth to invest in small businesses. Safety and health is one thing, but we need to make sure that rules and regulations enhance safety and health, not the ego of some governmental bureau crat, that rules and regulations arc there to give someone something to do. If President Clinton is serious about creating jobs, he will look to free small business to create jobs. You see, the smaller the business, the more labor intensive the enter prise. the other team to win the game. Tuesday afternoon it appeared that history would repeat itself. After scoring once in the bottom of the fourth on two hits, Monroe put four runners across the plate in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at five. Although Monroe would have two doubles in the in ning, two key errors by the Hornets opened the door for three of the four runs. Talton started the game, going five full innings before leaving the Westfield Hornets Date Opponent H/A:TIME Score March 8 Windsor H 1-10 March 12 Tattnall Tournament Macon Mt. de Sales 10-14 JohnMilledge 5- 6 March 14 FPD H 2-9 March 15 'Monroe A 8-5 March 18 John Milledge H: 4 pan. - March 19 Tattnall Tournament Macon - March 22 Windsor A: 4 p.m. - March 24 Stratford H: 4 pan. - March 25 *Mt. de Sales A: 4 pan. - March 31 John Milledge A: 4 p.m. - April 1 'Tattnall H: 1 pan. - April 5 Stratford A: 5 pan. - April 8 'Athens Christian A: 4 pan. - April 9 Glenwood (Ala.) Bred hit a grounder to short that was misplayed by the Bears with both runners scoring. They had moved up to third and second on a Varnadoe wild pitch. Three more runs in the fourth sealed the win for the Panthers, and again it was a hit batsman and a walk that put runners on base as Varnadoe experienced control trouble all afternoon. He gave up just four hits, but didn't help his cause with five walks and four hit batsmen, along with five Houston County errors. Staines started the sixth inning for the Hornets and finished the game. In his two innings of work, he did not allow a run, giving up two singles. Once again, Nuss led the Hor nets at the plate. He was two-for two with four RBIs. He also walked twice. The Panthers play Appling County at home Saturday, and coach Jones said "Brett is going to have to come back and give us a couple of innings, at least, on Saturday". The coach also said "I'm pleased with the progress our young team has made this early. We're getting down to some crucial region games now, and we have to keep playing heads-up and cut out the mental mistakes, and we will be alright." Jones is in his fourth year as Perry's head coach. He engineered a state championship in 1991.
