(NAPS)-If you're a do-it-yourself
decorator eager for a different look
in home furnishings, you're not
alone. Happily, by using a little re
sourcefulness and ingenuity, you
can create fresh, high-quality looks,
according to Lynn Townsend,
interior designer for Broyhill
Furniture Industries.
The following tips may point you
in the right direction.
•Start with quality furniture that
can be easily accessorized. Select a
brand that you're familiar with and
pay attention to the warranty.
Choose pieces that contain neutral
colors, patterns and simple lines.
Above all, look for furniture that
you will fell comfortable using for
seven to eight years-the average life
of a piece.
•Be creative with furniture fin
ishes. Metal furniture always mixes
with wood furniture, and using a
variety of finishes gives the home a
rich look.
•Rearrange-or exchange-furniture
for new looks. For example, replace
a wood coffee table with a glass-top
coffee table, o pull a sectional
group towards the middle of the
room to add a new point of interest.
•Enhance the space in smaller
rooms. Decorate in light colors and
use simple window treatments-or
no window treatments at all-to cre
ate the perception of a larger room.
•Have fun with your window
Heed These Lawn Care
Tips For Greener Grass
(NAPS) —'Hie grass could be greener
on your side of the fence if you heed
these tips from the Monsanto experts,
makers of Greensweep Ten Minute
Lawn Care Products.
• Water your grass early in die day
and allow it to dry off by sundown to
he Ip curb the spread of lawn fungus ;uid
disease.
• To mow and grow a better lawn, be
sure your lawn gels a half inch of water
every five days during the growing
season. Deep, infrequent watering en
courages deep, healthy root growth.
• Apply a selective weed and teed
product in die spring to prevent broad
leaf weeds like dandelion and chicken
weed from robbing your lawn of nutri
ents and moisture.
• To minimize stress on your lawn,
ad just mower blades to a cutdng height
of two-and-a-half inches in the spring
and raise blades to three inches in the
fall.
• To help control lawn damage, apply
a lawn insecdcide in early spring while
surface-feeding insects are active.
• The best way to control crabgrass is
to apply a pre-emergent crabgrass
preventer to stop it before it starts to
grow.
• Aerate your lawn to introduce oxy
gen into the turf, and leave grass clip-

Is Essential Component
(NU)-An essential component in
most homes used to be a well
stocked pantry. Today it’s a well
outfitted tool kit.
With doing-it-yourself a growing
pastime, studies show, 90 percent
of U.S. households own a tool box.
Half of those own more than one.
And half the do-it-yourselfers in
America are females.
The ultimate in practicality and
innovation for any do-it-yourselfer
is the Roughneck Step Stool Tool
Box from Rubbermaid, which com
bines the benefits of a step stool
with a tool box hidden inside for
convenient, space-saving and rust
proof storage.
Rubbermaid’s Step Stool Tool
Box includes a lift-out tray inside
with five compartments to hold
small tools; the box has rounded
no-snag contours and a dual-action
latch designed to prevent accidental
opening. A large cushion-grip han
dle makes carrying easy. The Step
Stool Tool Box will support up to
300 pounds.

energy costs, decreasing the amount
of energy needed for heating and
cooling is a good place to start.
Unless your home is constructed
with special attention to energy
conservation, adding insulation to
your attic could probably reduce
your utility bills.
Flint Electric Membership
Corporation recommends an R
value of 30, in all attic areas. The
depth in inches will vary based on
the type and form of insulation ma
terial used. The average depth for
most insulations will vary between
9.3 and 14 inches. So, grab a ladder
or pull down the attic stairs and
check it out.

•Substitute accessories for a quick
change. Choose accessories that re
flect the mood you're creating-brass
candlesticks and plant holders for an
elegant look or wicker baskets and
fun artwork for a more comfortable
atmosphere.
•Paint your exterior door. Choose
a color that reflects your style and
personality and works well with
your home's color scheme.

Monsanto, the company whose

a green thumb, is offering a once-in-a

Monsanto will provide “seed” money

"With the Homeowner Hotline we
are giving homeowners the oppor

dition, it gives the Association a
chance to stress to homeowners the
importance of hiring a professional
remodelcr and how professionalism
can make quite a difference in the
success of a project."
The hotline operates 24 hours per
day, 365 days a year. Operators are
trained to request specific informa
tion from all callers including
name, address, phone number and
where they learned of the
Homeowner Hotline. Service repre
sentatives fulfill requests immedi
ately and materials are mailed
within 72 hours of when the call
was placed.
Operators may ask about familiar
ity on a particular remodeling issue,
such as a new state law or subject
of debate, if the caller is from an
area where such an issue is relevant.
"This type of question clues callers
in to industry-related current events
and lets us know if industry news is
being heard by consumers," said
Evans.
The free brochure offered by the
hotline lists tips for identifying a
reliable professional remodelcr,
proper planning and financing for a
remodeling project and background
information on the Association and
its remodclcrs members.
As part of the fulfillment package,
callers received a list of the rernod
