Newspaper Page TextAuthor, Professor To Speak At April Meeting Of Duncan's UDC The regular monthly meeting of the Sgt. Clinton C. Duncan chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy will be held at 3:30 p.m. on April 16, 1994 at the Perry Public Library. The speaker will be Dr. Gerald J. ’ Smith of Martinez, Ga. Dr. Smith Senior Offered Full Appointment Kemp Offered Full Appointment to United States Air Force Academy Paul Kemp, a senior at Perry High School, has been offered a full appointment to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This prestigious appointment is offered to only 15 percent of the applicants nation-wide. Kemp had previously received nominations from both U.S. Senator Sam Nunn and U.S. Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. This offer of full appointment is an early selection appointment. The regular cycle for full appoint ments does not begin until April 1. In order to be considered for an PSH Senior Receives President's Scholarship Perry High School Senior, Jennifer Ann Gladu has been named the recipient of the President's Scholarship to Georgia Institute of Technology. This is Georgia Tech’s most prestigious award and carries with it a yearly stipend of $6,500. She was chosen on the basis of her SAT scores, grade point average, extra-curricular activities, leadership potential and interviews on the district and national level. Jennifer is both the Star Student and the Valedictorian of the Class of '94 and participated in the Governor's Honors Program during the summer of 1992. She is co editor of the school's literary magazine and also works on the staff of the yearbook and the newspaper. Jennifer is a member of the National Honor Society, Jr. Civitans and the Math Team. She is the daughter of Vernon and Judith Gladu, and is employed at the State Farm Insurance office of Tommy Storey. Johnson, Small Honored With Special Party Mr. and Mrs. Avon Buice, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Bishop, Mr. and Mrs. Draper Watson, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Ratliff ar.d Mr. and Mrs. Joe Leverette honored Lezlee Johnson and Chris Small on Friday, March 11,1994 with a bar-b-que supper at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Buice. The party was enjoyed by approximately 47 guests who were friends and classmates from Westfield and new friends from Northrop Corporation. Everyone enjoyed delicious bar-b-que complete with all the southern trimmings. The hosts presented the couple with a large picnic basket loaded with picnic supplies. The couple plans to be married on Saturday, May 14, 1994 at the Perry United Methodist Church. J 4pfc v DR. J. Dr. Smith is a member of the Society of Civil War Historians and the SCV Camp #l5B in Augusta. Leadership ability is also a re quirement. Kemp was the Squadron Commander of the Perry High School Air Force Junior ROTC program for the fall semester. He currently holds the position of Advisor which is a Lt. Colonel rank. He was an active member of the AFJROTC unit for all four years of high school and received numerous awards. Other activities in which Kemp is involved include the volunteer pro gram at Perry Hospital, Volunteer Houston County, co-chairman of a newly formed Political Awareness Club at Perry High School, mem ber of the Varsity Cross Country Team and active in the Perry High School Band Program. He is a member of the Science Club and Houston County 4-H Club, is an Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 96, member of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympics Dream Team 11, plus several clubs and community activities. Kemp is a member of Shirley Hills Baptist Church of which he is a member of the church orchestra. Additionally, he was the director for the Christmas-at-the-Crossroads 5K Run/Walk which was coordi nated through the Perry Area Chamber of Commerce.
