Church News A clear example of shallow spirituality Last week, in an interview with ABC News, President Clinton spoke of his personal religious beliefs. He's a Southern Baptist, and he talked about being a child of God who has searched for redemption. His language startled many because it is rare that a President speaks about such personal and spiritual things. In his interview with ABC News, President Clinton said he struggles to find the guidance of God in his job as President In a story from U.S. News & World Report, President Clinton states that his private religious convictions are inseparable from his public persona. He is quoted in the April 4,1994, edition as saying, "I do not believe I could do my job as president...in the absence of my faith in God.” All this rhetoric would lead many Americans to think we currently have one of the most spiritual Presidents in the White House. This language leads us to think President Clinton is constantly searching for God’s guidance and that his policies and practices flow out of his faith in God. But in light of what has been observed from the White House during this first year of his Rick Stanley to speak at FBC revival April 10-13 Internationally known evangelist Rick Stanley will be the speaker for a revival to be held at Perry First Baptist Church April 10-13. As the step brother of Elvis Presley, Stanley grew up at Graceland Mansion in Memphis and travelled the concert tour circuit with the king of rock and roll. Upon learning of the death of his famous brother, Stanley was in such shock and despair that he thought his life, too, had come to an end. However, he soon learned that there is a gracious, merciful and forgiving God who delights in new beginnings through the saving grace of His Son Jesus Christ. In October of 1977, Stanley gave his life to Christ and shordy thereafter knew that God was calling him into the ministry. He returned to high school (he had quit to travel with Elvis), then enrolled in Criswell Center for Biblical Studies in Dallas, Tx., and completed his de gree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Tx. Stanley is in constant demand to speak in schools, prisons, youth camps and churches. He has au Thankfully, the facts are subject to change One of the first things our Savior said as an adult was, "Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men." Jesus knew that a major part of His job here was to train men to accept the responsibility of training God's family in Christian living. We can still hear the message to men today: God has made you to be the authority in your home and in your community...with authority comes responsibility...with responsibility comes accountability!!! Too often we are willing to accept the authority but want nothing to do with responsibility or accountability. There are a few of the older generation left that remembers when the church was the hub of the community. Calendars were planned around the activities of the church...church leaders were respected and their opinion was heavily considered in making major decisions. They truly were considered to be "fishers of men”. Could a man who looks to God for guidance throw the concerns of conservative Christians out the window by pandering to the homosexual lobby? Could a man who confesses a dependency upon God enact legislation and make appointments that further the cause of pro-abortion advocates? Could such a spiritual leader appoint as Surgeon General someone like Jocelyn Elders who believes in legalized drugs and condom distribution? I don't think so. People Magazine did an eight page article about Stanley which includes his testi mony of how God turned his life around. Stanley has appeared several times with the Billy Graham Crusade. Stanley's message is clear, "There are two types of people on this earth-either saved or unsaved. Let me tell you what Jesus has done and continues to do for me, and how He will save you for eter nity and give you a vision and pur pose for your life on this earth. To God be the glory!"
