Crappie time is upon fishermen
The weather is just about right
for some fun springtime action for
crappie or white perch, depending
where you are from.
The water temperature in most of
the area lakes has reached the high
SOs and low 60s, making it just
right for these slabs to start bedding.
This time of the year crappie can be
caught anywhere from six inches to
10 feet of water. It all depends on the
lake and the phase of the moon.
By this full moon, which may be
already on us, crappie should be in
every brush pile on the lake. It
should be just a matter of dropping
your minnow in the water and hold
ing on.
Sounds simple? Well, maybe not.
The hardest trick is finding the
right brush pile, the right depth and
the right bait, the right bait may be
the easiest.
Most people opt for the old min
now routine, but believe it or not,
I’ve seen the time when a jig or
small spinner would temp them
more. Fishing for crappie is like
Fishing for other species; you don't
ever want to go planning on using
just one bait. You may be rudely
awakened when they won't bite
whatever you're offering them and
everyone else is catching them right
and left using something else.
Whenever Susanne and I go we
will always carry a few jigs with us.
We'll usually rig a couple to troll
along with the minnows.
We have seen some people use a
minnow hooked on the jig. I guess
this is what you would consider as
bettering your chances. Can’t say
that I blame you.
This day in time you have to
have every advantage you can possi
bly think of. There was one bass

Blackshear Lake: Lake is at a normal level; but is muddyCThere
have been some nice catches of crappie as they come under the
Cypress tress. Shell crackers are beginning to act like they want
to bed. However, bass fishing is still a little slow. Marion Stewart,
Camper's Haven.
Jackson Lake: The lake is at its normal level, but it's stained.
Fishing has picked up some in recent days. Crappie are biting
over the brushpiles. There are some pretty good size bass hitting
on chatreuse shadraps, green worms and lizards. Hybirds can be
caught on jigs. Van Kersey, Kersey’s Marina.
Oconee Lake: Lake is at a normal level; but is slightly stained.
Largemouth bass have moved into shallow water and are starting
fanning beds. Shad colored shadraps, chartreuse spinnerbaits
and RatL traps can be used to bring them up. Hybirds are hitting
live shad real well; although, little Georges and red and white jigs
can also be used. Crappie are starting to bed around the banks
and docks. They are hitting minnows and jigs. Jack Branyan,
Lakeview Bait and Tackle.
Seminole Lake: Lake is at a normal level and clear, with the
water temperature at 69 degrees. Although there is some action
on largemouth bass, they have moved back into shallow water
and aren't hitting well. Good catches of crappie are being
recorded with minnows and jigs. Shell crackers were beginning
to bed, but the cold water has forced them back into deep water.
Helen Wingate, Wingate’s Fishing Lodge.
Sinclair Lake: Lake is at a normal level; but, is stained.
Largemouth bass are back in the pockets and coves and are
sticking closs to cover. They are hitting plastic worms best, but
should start hitting spinnerbait. Crappie are waiting in the
brushpiles and are hitting minnows and jigs. Catfish are feeding
off cutbait and worms. Glen Colwell, Little River Park.
Lake Eufaula: Lake is at just under two feet from being normal,
and is slightly stained. The fishing is good with largemouth bass
still in shallow water, hitting colored lizards and spinnerbaits.
Crappie are moving to the banks and are biting on minnows and
jigs. Charles Ingram, Tom Mann’s Outdoors.
West Point Lake: The lake is over four foot below normal and is
slightly stained. Smaller bas are coming into shallow water. For
larger finds, go to the primary and secondary points. Spinner
baits and Carolina rigged lizards work best in shallow water;
while plastic worms are working best in deeper water. Crappie
are hitting jigs in eight.foot of water over brushpiles. Also being
taken are hybirds and white perch, which are hitting jigs with live
bait.
