Wayne Shackelford, Commissioner Department of Transportation 41-22 4/6-4/13 Georgia’s Public Involvement Process Program The Georgia Department of Transportation has initiated a process to encourage public involvement in the development of transportation programs. The purpose of the public involvement process is to provide opportunity for public comment on planning and programming of transportation initiatives. The public involvement process will be used in the development of the Statewide Transportation Improvement Plan and the Statewide Transportation Improvement Plan is a long range plan which will guide the transportation program for the next 20 years; development of this plan will begin soon. The Statewide Transportation Improvement Program is a program of proposed projects scheduled for implementation in a three year time frame. The public involvement process will include the “Family of Partners”, a volunteer group representing a broad cross-section of agencies and associations interested in transportation. The “Partners” will be asked to disseminate information and seek comments on transportation programs. In addition, meetings will be held at Regional Development Centers where the transportation program, issues, plans and new initiatives proposed for the region, or having statewide impact, will be presented. The meetings will provide an opportunity for public review and comment of the Statewide Improvement Program and Plan. The public involvement program will be periodically reviewed and updated to reflect recommendations from the general public and the “Family of Partners”.
