Uli returns from Germany
to visit the Sturgeon family
BY PAULINE LEWIS
Staff Writer
Ulrike Abratis, better known to
Penyans as "Uli", returned to Perry
on March 24, as a guest of the Ty
Sturgeon family.
She lived with the Sturgeons last
year when she was an Exchange
student at Perry High School. The
Sturgeon family consists of Ty,
Deanna, Nick and Kim.
Uli’s parents came to Perry when
she graduated with the 1993 class,
but when she returned home, she
was still in high school in
Germany. Her school has kinder
garten through grade 13 - she is in
the 11th grade this year. Students
are usually about 19 years old when
they graduate.
Asked what she plans to do upon
graduation from college, she said, "I
plan to teach, either English and
Math in Germany, or German in
the United States. I’m still thinking
about c011ege....1 haven't made up
my mind yet (as to which one she
will attend)."
Uli is the youngest of four chil
dren and lives in Eutin, Germany,
near Hamburg and the North Sea.
(There was snow on the ground
when Uli left for Georgia.) Her
family still lives there. She has a
sister who is a teacher, a brother in
the Navy and a brother who is a
joumalisL
Uli went to Perry High School for
four days last week, looking up old
friends, both teachers and students.
"It's good to see teachers and friends
again. It's not really like being on
a vacation, because they are like
family. I have had an enjoyable
time. Perry still seems like it did
last year when I left here," she said.
Tara Powers is one of Uli's good
friends. They played in the
Dogwood Tennis Tournament on
Fun Day, March 27. Tara won first
place and Uli second place in
Young Ladies Singles.
The Sturgeons, Uli, Tiffany
Powers and Sonya Adams are going
to Epcot next week for a "vacation”
trip.
Shopping in Perry and Macon

Pepsi Cola joins
DOT in efforts
to reduce litter
In a continuing effort to remind
Georgians about the ills associated
with littering, Pepsi-Cola has
teamed up with the Georgia
Department of Transportation
Pepsi-Cola. "We feel that
partnering with the Georgia DOT in
their effort to reduce roadside litter
is a very effective way to
demonstrate our commitment to a
cleaner environment"
The "Let's Keep Georgia Peachy
Clean" effort was launched in 1990
as a means of informing Georgians
about the state’s litter problem. In
addition to increasing awareness
about litter, the DOT also is
promoting its Adopt-A-Highway
program, recycling awareness and
proper litter disposal.
Since 1990, over 3,000 miles of
state highway have been "adopted"
by concerned citizens for litter
removal through the Adopt-A-
Highway program and visible
roadside litter in many areas across
the state has been reduced
significantly.
"The Department of
Transportation is delighted to
recognize the involvement of Pepsi-
Cola in the DOTs efforts to reduce
litter along the state's streets and
highways," said DOT
Commissioner Wayne Shackelford.

Since being here, she attended ser
