AARP chapter celebrates 20th anniversary in Perry BY BRENDA THOMPSON Staff Writer She had lost her will to live. She was 70 years old and had spent more than a quarter of a cen tury caring for and spending time with her husband. When he passed away, she simply felt that she had nothing to live for. “She really became despondent” Perry resident Ray Bethune said of his mother. “She was at loose ends.” And, then came AARP-the American Association for Retired Persons--and their popular work force program for senior citizens. “Mother was living in Augusta where the AARP chapter matched her up with a job at the Ronald McDonald House, working with and taking care of the children and others who were there visiting cancer patients at the hospital,” Bethune said in explaining why he himself has become so involved with the AARP program. “It was so nice to see her come alive and so happy. Even after she was diag nosed with cancer herself, and, up until a month before she died, she stayed at it She loved it and so did I." He told his story this week in hopes of spreading the word about the many wonderful programs AARP offers its millions of mem bers throughout the nation. He told his story hoping to get more people involved at the local level, so that more AARP pro grams-such as the workforce pro gram which helped his mother might be activated in the Perry community. He told his story in celebration of the local chapter’s 20th anniver sary, a milestone which was marked Tuesday evening when Perry Mayor Jim Worrall re-presented the chapter’s original charter during the group’s regular April meeting. Established in April 1974, the Perry Chapter of AARP currently has 94 members within its ranks, many of whom work diligently to make the local unit a driving force in the world of community service organizations. They hold fundraisers such as a flea market at the recent Dogwood Festival and do volunteer work at places such as the Peach Blossom Cluster Dog Show being held this week and the annual Georgia National Fair. In addition, with the help of the national AARP program, the local chapter’s members also provide a number of services to the older and needier citizens of Perry from then special Free Tax Aid Program which has helped nearly 2,000 Houston Countians file their federal income taxes this year to their “55- Alive Driving Course” which has made nearly 1,000 senior citizen drivers living in the area safer and more confident motorists in just a few short months. They do a lot of work in the community, but they would like to do more, says Bethune. To be a member of the local AARP, you must simply be over 50 years of age or have a spouse that is over 50 years of age. The group meets on the second Tuesday of every month at the Perry Agri cultural Extension Building.
