In the seventh, with the Panthers and Pirates tied at three, Brett came to the plate with the potential winning run at second. Terry Yawn Hornet tennis teams beat Monroe 6-3 By VETO F. ROLEY Staff Writer The Westfield tennis team took a pair of 6-3 victories over Monroe Academy Monday in preparation for the region tournament. The women's team was helped by two forfeits in singles play, and one forfeit in doubles play. Marla Massey defeated Mackenzie Vaughn 8-3 and Rupal Patel defeated Lesley Ellerbee 8-0. Number eight player Laura Pear son got a chance to play, but lost Thinclads, from 7a and three-and-a-half inches. The long jump was the highest individual finish of any Westfield woman thinclad. She also finished third in the 200 meter dash with a time fo 27.57 seconds and third in the 100 meter dash with a time of Jones, from 7A groundout scored Brett with Perry's only run. Brett had singled in the second after Waldrip walked and stole sec ond. But Waldrip was cut down at the plate on a great throw from cen terfielder Brent McGourick. That would be Perry's only scoring threat until the seventh in ning. Brett paced the Panther offense with two hits, including a triple. Waldrip had the other Perry hit, a Soccer, from 7A the road to do something that no other Perry team had ever done win on the road. Freshman Richie Gill lead the way with five goals as his team knocked off Vidalia for the second time this year, 8-1 Monday night. "Granted, Vidalia isn't exactly a strong soccer team," Panther coach Carl Thomas admitted "But, at this point, every victory means some thing. " Despite the lack-luster competi tion, the Panthers are racking up an impressive winning streak, outscor ing their last three opponents by the combined score of 12-2. Waldrip walked three, struck out 11, gave up three hits and one earned run in his final game as a Panther. The senior is expected to play college baseball, with several scholarship offers on die table. Coach Jones said, "Our kids could have folded the tent after the 4-0 deficit I’m proud of them for that seventh inning. It says something kind about them." 4-5 on the year; but, they will still have a hard time getting into the playoffs with a 2-5 Region 2AAA record. "I don't expect us to make the playoffs," freshman fullback Daniel Wright said, "but if we continue to play like a team, and we can win the rest of our games, we’ve at least got a shot." The Panthers played another road game last night in Jordan and will host Pacelli tomorrow before traveling to Brookstone Friday for their regular season finale. Miles Lancaster took the Hornets' fifth singles victory, with a 8-1 win over Singletary. The Hornets had only one dou bles win, with Watson and Shipley combining to beat Singletary and Dodd 8-3. Stephanie Barr. In other individual finishes, Audra Calvin came in fourth in the 3200 meter run. Julee Fryer came in sixth in the shot put with a throw of 27 feet, 9 inches. Barr had a fifth with a triple jump of 28 feet, six-and-three-fourths inches. Mary Catherine Walker ran the metric mile in 6:27 minutes to finish in sixth. In men's competition, Matt Shepley finished the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.90 seconds, good enough for fifth. Lon Talton and Tom Newberry took third and fourth in the 800 meter run. Talton finished the run with a time of 2:10, eight seconds in front of Newberry. The men's 400 meter relay team came in fourth with a time of 46.68 inches. "We're playing with a lot more confidence now," said Thomas. "We're not exactly playing better, we’re just cutting back on the mis takes." In their victory over Vidalia, Gill scored the first two goals of the game followed by a score by senior Boris Nedev. Brian Mourning also got in the action by putting two points on the scoreboard. Sophomore goalie Derrick Webb continues to improve as he held the Indians to a mere one goal in two match-ups.
