Deadline for Houston golf HOF nears
The deadline for nominations for
the Houston County Golf Hall of
Fame, housed at Houston Lake
Country Club, is April 28, an
nounced Peter Snipes, media direc
tor for the Houston County Hall of
Fame Golf Tournament.
Nominees to the Hall will be
evaluated on their long-time contri
butions to the game in Houston
County. Currently, there are five
members of the Hall: Alan White,
Brown McDonald Sr., Eddie Wig
gins, Eddie Causey and Bobby
Jones.
Information on the nominating
process can be obtained by contact
ing the pro shop at any of the six
member courses of the Houston
County Golf Association. The
member courses are Houston Lake
Country Club, the Landings, Wa
terford Golf Club, Pine Oaks Golf
Club, International City Golf Club
and Perry Country Club.

Nuss paces the Hornets at the
plate, hitting a shade under .400
with two homers and 16 RBIs.
"He's not getting good pitches,"
said Brown. "People are pitching
around Troy (Nuss). He has to be
patient so much, at times he be
comes impatient."
Talton and Staines are the aces
of the Hornets staff. Talton, after
getting off to an 0-5 start with an
ERA around 7.00, has started pitch
ing better in the last four games,
recording all three wins, including a
complete game shutout against Ge
Soccer, from 6A
behind to pull out the tie. He also
noted that the squad was at less than
full strength since many of the
players were at a track meet.
Richie Gill, the Panthers' lead
ing scorer, also had an off day. "He
(Gill) was not as sharp as he nor
mally is," said Thomas.
Thomas said for the Panthers to
win consistently at soccer, they had
to have others step up when one of
their better players had an off day.
"That's (an off-day) just human
nature," said Thomas. "But, others
have to take up the slack. To win
consistently, you are going to have
to do that."
Thomas said the game showed
his other players that they could
take up the slack if one of his front
line players was off. "In order to do
the job, you have to believe that
you can do the job," said Thomas.
"Once you have done it, it is easy
to have the confidence to do the
job."
The soccer team is also getting
more respect in the school hallways
since the recent wins, said Thomas.

Jeff Dortch and Miles Lancaster 6-

would go on to finish fourth in the
tournament.

tennis team will miss the state
tournament, Crooms will have one

Largemouth bass abundance
continues to be very strong when

phenomenon.
Bass survival and growth is

Robins Air Force Base will be the
site of this year's Houston County
Hall of Fame Golf Tournament.
The event, which rotates among the
six courses in the county, will be
held Saturday, May 28.
The annual Hall of Fame Ban
quet will be held that night in the
Officers' Gub. The primary banquet
activity will be the induction of
new members into the Hall of

"The Hall of Fame was begun

complete game recorded by a Hornet
pitcher this season. His ERA has
come down to 5.71.
Staines, a freshman, holds both
of the Hornets other wins, having a
record of 2-3 with an ERA of 3.50.
Together, the two pitchers have all
five of the Hornet wins, combining
for an ERA of 4.52.
Brown has used four other pitch

are a combined 0-4, with a 7.23
ERA.
"Before, we caught our share of

to take notice."
Although Gill had an off-game,
he scored the first goal for the Pan

Perry the early 1-0 lead 20 minutes
into the game. Boris Nedev had the
only other goal for Perry, his goal
coming 15 minutes into the second

plan to continue training to get the
next level. In about two years,
they will be eligible to become
women's double team to play in the
state tournament next Wednesday.
Even though Westfield did not
get good draws over all, the doubles
pair of Leslie Davis and Susanna

women's final. "They did an excel

One item favoring the Panthers
is that the region tournament will
be played on familiar ground, Hous
ton Lake Country Club, which has
served for most of the year as the
Panther's home course. "It's going
to help us a lot," said Barton.
Barton said the team to beat in
the region tournament will be Ware
County. "Ware County is, by far,
the best team in the region," said
Barton. "They shoot the lights
out."
While he is not conceding first
place in the tournament to the Ga
tors, Barton admits his team will
have a tough time beating the team
from Waycross. "If they (the Pan
thers) had their best day, we could
beat them," said Barton. "But, we
need for Gann to be five or six
strokes under and the others to be
around three over."
Behind Ware County are Fitzger
ald and Wayne County, two teams
that Barton said the Panthers can
play with. "I think we have a good
chance of winning second and going
to the state (tournament)," said Bar
ton.
Barton said that going from
match play, which in the GHSA is
nine holes, to tournament play,
which is the full 18 holes, would
not hurt the Panthers, noting that
his team has played in several 18
hole tournaments this year.
Assistant Instructors under Lewis.
"I'm definitely looking forward
to having them help us out,” Lewis
bragged. "They're so dedicated and
focused, it's a pleasure to work with
such people. It's always nice to
have people who enjoy what they
do."
"I'm looking forward to helping
teach," Douglas and Bray both
agreed, "I want to help make sure
that Perry Athletic Karate remains
the best school around."
Hinds and Vaugn 6-1, 6-1 to ad
vance to the finals.
However, George Walton's
number one pair of Simmons and
Williams would win the region's
doubles title with a straight set 6-4,
6-1 win, ending Davis’ and Turner's
run through the region bracket
Watson and Shipley will play in
the state tournament, as will Davis
and Turner.

Nearly every public and private

Hunting is not only an accept
