J*** r t|^M| i Carlton Ted Pender, Jr. and Andrea Idell Marler Andrea Marler will marry Ted Pender, Jr. May 28 Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Marler of Watkinsville, Ga., announce the engagement of their daughter, Andrea Idell Marler to Carlton Ted Pender Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Ted Pender Sr. of Perry. The wedding is planned for Saturday, May 28, 1994 at the Perry First Baptist Church. The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Glenn and Carlos Hale of Chattanooga, Tenn., Mrs. Willie Beckham Marler and the late Mr. Robert Fred Marler of Birmingham, Ala. A graduate of Oconee County High School, she attended the University of Georgia New Perry cook working hard for certified chef title By PAULINE LEWIS Staff Writer "I learned to cook when I was about six years old and have loved cooking ever since then my mother taught me," so stated Danny Code, the only cook at New Perry Hotel, and the Houston Times- Journal's Cook of the Week. Code's ambition is to become a certified chef, but first he has to take the GED test (he completed the 11th grade at Perry High School) and then complete the work at Macon Technical Institute to be come a chef. He has already completed two years in food services at Macon Tech and two years of food services at the Houston County Vocational School. He worked for two years at Kellwood on machinery and at the Agricenter for three years tying steel when the facility was under construction. In fact, he says that he was the third person out there when work was started. He was working at the same time with cooking-working at a barbecue cen ter along Sam Nunn Boulevard for 10 years, and later, at the New Perry Hotel. He is in his eighth year at the hotel. He has two sons and two daugh ters. He also has two brothers liv ing in Perry and a "baby sister" liv ing in West Virginia that he plans to visit this month "after the Mother's Day rush" at the hotel, and after his 37th birthday on May 10. As a boy, he played all kinds of sports and still likes them, but is especially fond of football and fish ing, although he said does not have time for fishing and he watches football on TV when he has an op portunity. "I have 29 rows in my garden", he stated, "with peas, butter beans, cu cumbers, tomatoes, turnips, rutaba gas and peppers." He attends Kings Chapel C.M.E. Church. SHREDDED YAMS 2 lbs. raw sweet potatoes 1 gallon water 1 tsp. salt 1 cup sugar 1 cup pineapple juice 1/2 cup pineapple juice 1/2 cup white Karo syrup 1/2 cup margarine 1/2 cup water Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F. Peel and shred yams. Add salt to 1 gallon of water. Wash and drain yams and then put them into a bak ing dish or shallow pan. Mix sugar, Karo, 1/2 cup water. Cook until simple syrup forms. Add mar garine, pour pineapple juice over yams and add simple syrup. Bake until yams are transparent about 45 minutes. Serves 10-12. VEG-ALL CASSEROLE 2 cans Veg-AU, drained 1 can cream of mushroom soup 1/2 chopped onion (1/2 cup) 1 cup chopped celery Ritz crackers 1/2 cup grated cheese 1 small can water chestnuts 1/2 stick oleo, melted 1 cup mayonnaise Ms. Campbell, Mr. Lasseter to exchange vows Heather Nicole Campbell and David Riley Lasseter announced their plans to be married on Saturday, May 21, 1994 in the First Baptist Church in Perry at 2 p.m. Heather is the daughter of Gregory and Gayle Campbell of Boone, N.C. and the granddaughter of John and Jean Young of Panama City Beach, Fla., Thelma Campbell and the late Ralph Campbell of Evansville, Indiana. Beltista Club plans for benefit By PAULINE LEWIS Staff Writer Members of the Beltista Club met at the home of Jackie Klein this week to address entry forms to Middle Georgia golfers for the up coming Middle Georgia Golf Classic for Epilepsy. The golf tournament will be held May 20 at Houston Lake Country Club. The entry fee of $65 includes golf and a buffet lunch, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Tee time is 1 p.m. Major sponsors of the tournament are: Weyerhaeuser and CB&T. Pour melted oleo over cracker crumbs and bake at 350 degrees F. for 30-45 min utes. SQUASH LORRAINE 3 lbs. cooked squash 1 large onion, chopped 1 stick of margarine 4 eggs, beaten 1 small can mushrooms, drained 1/2 cup grated sharp cheese 1 tube of saltines (crushed) 3 tsp of sugar 1 tsp baking powder salt and pepper to taste Saute’ onions in margarine. Mix all ingredients and pour into a but tered 9 xl2" baking dish. Bake at 325 degrees F. for about 25 min utes. CHEESE SOUFFLE 1 tube of saltines (crushed) 4 eggs 1 1/2 cups sharp cheese, shredded 1/3 cup of melted butter 3 cups of milk salt and pepper to taste Mix all ingredients well. Pour into a 1 1/2-quart baking dish. Cook until done, about 45 minutes. Insert toothpick to sec if it is done.
