A million dollar shootout was held at the conclusion of play on Sunday. David Brown came the closest out of the eight competitors eligible with a shot that rolled to within 12 feet of an ace and $1 million. "This year was our biggest yet,” said Tom Waldrof, one of the tour nament sponsors. "We had 96 Hornets, from 6A season. "We won the region and finished fourth in the state," said Arrington. "There are a lot of people who would like to swap places with us." John Walker of FPD was low medallist for the state, shooting a 69. Ed Strickland was the closest Westfield golfer, coming into the clubhouse with a 77. Todd Rigdon finished the day one stroke behind Strickland with a 78. Both scores were close to the season averages of the two players, who led the Hornets to a near-unde feated regular season. The only two losses for Westfield during the regu Taylor and Jackson make state meet For most of the women, the 1994 Panther track meet is over, as the Panther lady thinclads finished near the bottom in the region track meet held at Perry Monday after noon. Although the meet was long for Roley, from 6A - strike out, even the star will drop a ball, even the star will cause his team to lose every once in a while. I've seen star players afraid to make a mistake for fear of catching it from a coach or a parent. I've seen games where everyone but the star enjoyed the game. He's just a kid. Let your kid know that you love him. Too often in youth sports, the kids feel that love is conditional on the last at-bat, the last pitch, the last fielding attempt. Look for chances to praise your child. So he struck out his only two plate attempts —but, did he swing the bat, did he make contact? A bad game is a perfect opportu nity for a parent to let his child know that he loves him or her un conditionally. It is the perfect time to take a child and say, "I love you for being you." Second flight winner was Mike lar season came at the hands of eventual state champion, South land. Scott Hill took third among the Hornet golfers, finishing the after noon with an 80. Robert Harrison and Keith Davis tied with 86. Arrington said his team was looking forward to next year. All five of his top golfers will be back next year. He added that he had sev eral golfers that did not make the cut for the team, but that could im prove their games and challenge for positions next year. Davis is the oldest member of the team, and is the only junior on most of the team, two members of the Perry team will make an ap pearance in the state meet. You child will never hit the homerun that you never hit. He will never steal the base you never stole. He will never win the game that you might have lost. Far too many parents try to live a fantasy through their children. A parent's fantasy often robs the child of the game. There is a poem that is used by many youth leagues. I don't know the author, but here is the poem: "Just a Litdc Boy" He stands at the plate with Heart pounding fast— The bases are loaded; the die has been cast. Mom and dad cannot help him, he stands all alone; A hit at this moment would sent the team home. The ball meets the plate; he swings and he misses— ■IH \V ****** -— ... In the fourth flight, Dave Barker and Bill Carlisle shot a 144, good enough to give them first place. Lanny English and Mike Ratliff took a tie breaker with Jerry Harrell and Duane Runswick. Both teams finished with a 139. The event raised $2,000 for the Rainbow House, which works for the prevention of child abuse. the team. Strickland, Rigdon and Hill are sophomores, while Harri son is only in the eighth grade. "We will be back in the hunt (for the state title) next year," said Arrington. PmCiCmy from6A anapolis, Ind. There's a groan from the crowd with some boos and some hisses. A thoughtless voice cries, "Strike out the Bum!" Tears fill his eyes; the game's no longer fun. So open your eyes and give him a break, For it's moments like this a man you can make. Keep this in mind when you hear someone forget, He's just a little boy, and not a man yet. Finally, we need to remember that the game belongs to the child. When adults take over, they ruin the game. That should never, ever happen.
