Youth fishing rodeo
to be held at city park
The Perry Parks and Recreation
Department will hold their annual
youth fishing rodeo at Rozar Park
on Keith Drive Saturday, May 21,
from 10 a.m. until noon.
There is no cost for the fishing
rodeo,which is open to kids five-to
-16-years-old. All participants must
be accompanied by an adult
The Parks and Recreation De
partment will provide a free hot dog
lunch to participants. Cane poles
will also be available for those who
do not own fishing rigs.
The Georgia Department of Nat
ural Resources, Perry Police De
partment and Perry Fire Department
will be on-hand to assist at the
rodeo.
Ga. Governor will be
at groundbreaking
The public is invited to attend
the groundbreaking ceremony of
Middle Georgia Technical Institute’s
new campus on Thursday, May 26,
1994.
The new campus will be located
at the intersection of Highway 96
and Houston Lake Road, three
miles south of Warner Robins.
The ceremony will begin at 10
a.m. and the keynote speaker will
be Governor Zell Miller.
There will be live musical
entertainment and refreshments will
be served.

Institute in celebrating the
beginning of a new era in technical
education for all of Middle Georgia.

luncheon is today
May Thyme, the annual lun
cheon gala sponsored by the
women of All Saints Episcopal

Post 2 candidates invited to forum

All six candidates running for
the post two seat of the Houston
County Commission have been in
vited to go head-to-head during a
special political forum to be held
Saturday, June 4, in Elko.
The forum, which is being orga
nized by concerned citizens Ronald
L. Cain and Tammy Welliver, both
of Elko, will be held at 10 a.m. at

Witnesses say that a van which
ran a stop sign at the
intersection of Kings Chapel
Road and Keith Drive in Perry
may have been thr cause of a
one car accident that sent two
people to the hospital emergency
room Tuesday evening.
According to the accident report
filed by the Perry Police Depart
ment, Rosa Lee Sutton of Perry
was traveling south bound on
Kings Chapel Road when
another vehicle eastbound on
HEMA Director Bob Smith announces retirement

After nine years as director of the
Houston County Emergency Man
agement office (HEMA), Bob
Smith is retiring.
He made the announcement dur
ing the regular meeting of the
Houston County Commission
Tuesday evening in Warner Robins.
His last day will be June 22.
“I’m 70-years-old and I’ve given
this a lot of thought. These past
few years, there’s been a lot going
on in emergency management, but
everything seems to be in good
shape now,” Smith said Tuesday
following the announcement. “I
just feel this is a good time to go.”
According to Smith, he has been
the director of the local HEMA of
fice for almost a decade, having
taken the reins from former director
Ed Wagnon who retired from the
position in 1985. Before being
promoted, he served as Wagnon’s
deputy director for five years, from
1980 to 1985.
Prior to that, from 1972 until
1980, Smith also served as the vol

her to slam on her brakes to avoid a
collision.
When Sutton slammed on brakes,

Fire Commission.
As HEMA’s head man, Smith,
along with his five-year deputy di
rector, Jimmy Williams, is in
charge of making sure the county is
prepared for all types of emergen
cies, from man-made emergencies
such as hazardous material spills to
nuclear and natural disasters. His
office oversees the operation of two
rescue vehicles and well over a 100
volunteer rescue personnel and is on
call 24-hours-a-day, seven days a
week.
Additionally, for the past nine
years, Smith has also been charged
with overseeing the operations and
budget for the county’s volunteer
fire department program, which
now utilizes some 180 volunteers.
This part of Smith’s job will
soon be relieved, however, as the
county recently created and is
interviewing for a new fire chief
position. The new position is ex-
