Midstate business
men help Players
with new theatre
Eleven years ago, the founding
members of Perry Players listed
among its mission statement "a
comfortable theatre home audiences
and performers love to visit.” So,
in the Fall of 1991, when the cur
rent board began looking for sites,
they also began looking for expert
assistance in making that dream
come true.
Mike Slater, Director of Design
Management at Williams and Asso
ciates in Macon, was involved from
the outset. "I actually began with
Perry Players in 1988 when I
played the doctor in 'Never Too
Late'. 1 was already familiar with
their standards and enthusiasm, so
when they approached me about
helping with the project, I was glad
to be involved."
"The theater was designed by
Charles Brittain," says Donna
Hooper, "but Mike was invaluable.
From the beginning, he helped us
formulate the specifics of what we
actually wanted, and guided those
goals through each phase of the de
velopment process. He also volun
teered his talents with some of the
design work, which helped us
tremendously on our restricted bud
get."
As the building moved on, so
did the need for additional outside
assistance. Steve Aydelott, cur
rently the General Manager of War
ren Scott Construction in Ameri
cus, worked with Slater when the
project began, and became interested
in helping as he watched it
progress. He volunteered to oversee
the building phase, and secured
bids, selected the contractors, pro
vided cost and material estimates.
"I've never been associated with
theater before," says Aydelott, "but
I believe in being active in the
community. And with Mike's in
volvement, and the contributions
that Perry Players makes to Middle
Geeorgia, I knew it was a project I
wanted to do."
After three years and countless
hours of planning, designing, re-de
signing and multitudes of behind
the-scene work, everything came
together quickly. In January of this
year, Marty Myers of Myers Con
tracting and Supply was hired to
make it happen,. "Time was not
on our side, so to speak," says
Donna Hooper. "The Music Man'
was opening in late February, so
basically we had six weeks to go
from blueprints to reality." Myers
was at the building throughout the
construction, serving as the on-site
contact for his own crew and those
of the sub-contractors. "One of the
challenges of this building is fram
ing around all of its little quirks.
Marty's crew was meticulour with
that and everything else they did.
What we're most grateflul for,
though, is that he was here, at the
building when we couldn't be.
With such a tight schedule, and so
many different people working on
top of each other, we were worried
about it being finished in time, and
in the right way. But once we saw
Marty's standards, we knew we'd be
all right."
The hard work and dedication of
these three men did not go unno
ticed. In his March 4th article,
Larry Fennelly, entertainment
columnist for The Macon Tele
grap[h, called the building's trans
formation "The Miracle on Main
Street". "That was a tremendous
compliment," says Hooper.
"Everyone involved with Perry
Players has known and appreciated
what Mike, Steve, and Marty have
done for us. But to have a third
party walk in and recognize the im
pact they had on our success indi
cated the true size of their contribu
tions."
As a result, last month Perry
Players hosted a dinner at the New
Perry Hotel to honor them. And,
in keeping with the theatre group’s
tradition, each was presented with
an inscribed pewter plate thanking
them for their commitment to the
"Miracle on Main Street". "The
time, resources and talents they
have donated to the theatre are per
manent gifts to Perry Players and to
Middle Georgia," says Hooper, "and
we want the pcop;le who enjoy our
productions to know what Mike
Slater, Steve Aydelott and Marty
Myers have done for us."
