Whiplash is defined as an injury to the cervical spine caused by an abrupt jerking motion to the head. Due to increased congestion on highways, power brakes and more powerful engines injuries of this type are much more frequent today. To fully understand what happens in this type of neck injury, it might be helpful to understand the mechanics of the neck. The neck is comprised of seven small bones known as the cervical spine. The bones of the neck are arranged in a curvature that must be maintained to allow a clear channel for the passage of the spinal cord, which travel through the center of these bones. Along with the spinal cord are nerves which exit the cord in between these small bones. When a person receives a whiplash injury the bones in the neck move out of the normal position and restrict the nerves and blood vessels.
