Perry Players recognize three contributors Eleven years ago, the founding members of Perry Players listed among its mission statement "a comfortable theatre home audiences and performers love to visit." So, in the fall of 1991, when the cur rent board began looking for sites, they also began looking for expert assistance in making that dream come true. Mike Slater, Director of Design Management at Williams and Asso ciates in Macon, was involved from the outset. "I actually began with Perry Players in 1988 when I played the doctor in 'Never Too Late'. I was already familiar with their standards and enthusiasm, so when they ap proached me about helping with the project, I was glad to be involved," Slater stated. "The theater was designed by Charles Brittain," says Donna Hooper, "but Mike was invaluable. From the beginning, he helped us formulate the specifics of what we actually wanted, and guided those goals through each phase of the de velopment process. He also volun teered his talents with some of the design work, which helped us tremendously on our restricted bud get." As the building moved on, so did the need for additional outside assistance. Steve Aydelott, cur rently the General Manager of War ren Scott Construction in Ameri cus, worked with Slater when the project began, and became interested in helping as he watched it progress. He volunteered to oversee the building phase, and secured bids, selected the contractors, pro Robins. Paul and Nicole Johnson, a drama team, will have center stage this Sunday evening. Psalm 40:3. In 1974 this became the Hpppr * rflpj Jennifer Gladu Perry High valedictorian vided cost and material estimates. "I've never been associated with theater before,” says Aydelott, "but I believe in being active in the community. And with Mike's in volvement, and the contributions that Perry Players makes to Middle Georgia, I knew it was a project I wanted to do." After three years and countless hours of planning, designing, re-de signing and multitudes of behind the-scene work, everything came together quickly. In January of this year, Marty Myers of Myers Con tracting and Supply was hired to make it happen. "Time was not on our side, so to speak," says Donna Hooper. "'The Music Man' was opening in late February, so basically we had six weeks to go from blueprints to real ity." Myers was at the building throughout the construction, serv ing as the on-site contact for his own crew and those of the sub-con tractors. "One of the challenges of this building is framing around all of its little quirks. Marty's crew was meticulous with that and everything else they did. What we're most grateful for, though, is that he was here, at the building when we couldn't be. With such a tight schedule, and so many different people working on top of each other, we were worried about it be ing finished in time, and in the right way. But once we saw Marty's standards, we knew we'd be all right," Hooper said. The hard work and dedication of these three men did not go unno Scripture theme of Sacred Music, Inc. and Betty Moni Ministries. Through the years, God has taken these ministries far and wide, all across the United States, as well as internationally. Betty's recordings are filled with favorites, new and old, and include some of her original compositions as well. She has also written a little book, "Where To Go When It Hurts”. In his March 4 article, Larry Fennelly, entertainment columnist for The Macon Telegraph, called the building's transformation "The Miracle on Main Street". "That was a tremendous com pliment," says Hooper. "Everyone involved with Perry Players has known and appreciated what Mike, Steve, and Marty have done for us. But to have a third party walk in and recognize the impact they had on our success indicated the true size of their contributions." As a result, last month Perry Players hosted a dinner at the New Perry Hotel to honor them. And, in keeping with the theatre group's tradition, each was presented with an inscribed pewter plate thanking them for their commitment to the "Miracle on Main Street". "The time, resources and talents they have donated to the theatre are permanent gifts to Perry Players and to Middle Georgia," says Hooper, "and we want the people who enjoy our productions to know what Mike Slater, Steve Aydelott and Marty Myers have done for us.” For information about the next play, "Arsenic and Old Lace", 5354). It is time to awake out of sleep for salvation A father walked into his son's room one day and noticed his boy playing on the floor with some building blocks. The father knelt down and asked, "Son, what are you building with those blocks? " The son replied, "I'm building a church, so be very quiet." The father was puzzled. "If this is a church, then why must we be quiet? " The son replied, "Because all the people are asleep!" Have you ever fallen asleep in church? I will admit that even I have been guilty of dozing off during a sermon. My most embarrassing experience was when I fell asleep while listening to a tape recording of one of my own sermons! It's amazing that some people can even sleep at night because of the amount of time they spend sleeping in church! If you are not a sleeper at church, I bet you know someone who is, don't you? My biggest concern is not with people who fall asleep physically but with those who are asleep spiritually. Physical sleep lasts for a short while, but spiritual sleep can last for decades if someone is not roused from his slumber. Clean Your Closets & Make sss Call 987-1823 To Place Your Classified Today!
