The day looks perfect for a relaxing walk. The difference is that ever step is taken with agonizing pain. The moment your foot meets the ground you feel a jolt travel from your hip to your toes. As you walk along, you notice that you're focusing harder and harder to block out the pain. The conversation in your head is "deafening.” Walk it off, it’ll be ok. Keep it moving. Don't stop now. That's what my ball coach always said. As long as I can move I'm not really hurt." Suddenly you realize that something isn't right about this. You have to get help. Sadly, this is the story I hear from so many people with injuries. The real tragedy is that many times the injury is worsened by trying to exercise the problem away. We have to remember that anytime we feel pain it indicates an area in distress. A part of our body is telling us that something isn't just right. Usually the pain is focused around a joint. So what can forcing the joint exercise do? Although exercising the joint doesn't guarantee further damage, it's not a chance you want to take. The highest risk involves exercising when the pain "shoots" or travels from one area to another, such as from the neck to the shoulder or from the hip to the foot. These symptoms almost guarantee that a nerve is involved. But how can it be? Isn’t exercise good for injuries? The secret is timing. First find out why the pain is there.
