Budding young artists in Marshallville
Is there a Picasso, a Rembrandt,
or a Degas in the area? Who
knows? It remains to be seen, but
certainly there are many gifted
youngsters here in Macon County.
I ven the great had their beginnings
and the Marshallville Creative
Alternative was founded to provide
an opportunity for beginning, for
exploration and expansion of
artistic expression on the part of
youngsters in Marshallville who
demonstrate some potential. The
eight young people who are
currently participating in the project
are Wesley Nedd, Leontray Rucker,
Derek James, Darnell Hamlin,
Michael Nixon, Chad Ellison,
Lawrence McGhee, and Ronald
Goins. The Creative Alternative,
founded and coordinated by Susan
Turner and supported by a Grass
Roots Arts Grant through Middle
flint Regional Development Center
began in February, 1994. Its
purpose is to make art and
instruction more accessible to those
children in Marshallville who
demonstrate an interest and a
potential proficiency, but require
training beyond their families’

Support group installs officers

The Council for Exceptional
Children, Houston County Chapter,
met at the New Perry Hotel last
week to recognize past accom
plishments and to install officers
for the 1994-95 year.
Members of this group are teach
ers, administrators and para profes
sionals who work with children.
The chapter meets monthly at local
schools at 4 p.m. on the third

creative gifts-Edna Garrett and Zoe
Bickley of Marshallville and Anita
Hill of Fort Valley. The program
will culminate with a showing of
the youngsters' creative efforts at
the Art Show and Sale scheduled for
July 2, at the Marshallville Crape
Wednesday. This is a support
group for people with children who
have special needs.
