Maroon and Gold clinic here at PHS The Maroon and Gold Basketball Camp will be held in June and July, announced Perry High School head basketball coach Carl Thomas. Thomas said the camp will have three sessions. The first session will be for males entering grades 6- Pennington, from7A And it appears to also have hit home in a special kind of way. It was soon after the arrival of a newborn daughter that Pennington and her husband, James, were ad vised that the infant had been diag nosed with Pulmonic Stenosis, a serious heart condition. “There was a time when we never knew if she would make it, much less be involved in sports,” the mom-tumed-coach said. But luckily, the problem was corrected and Jessica has defied the odds. Today, the seven-year-old is a member of the family-sponsored Pennington 111 Plumbing team. “She’s fine now,” Pennington said in reference to her daughter’s condition. “Just to know that she can get out there and play means everything in the world, not only to us, but to her. We honestly didn’t expect she would be able to (compete) after talking to the doc tors.” It is from that experience alone that Pennington, who is also as sisted by her husband on the field, says makes each and every kid spe cial. “Early in the season, some of the girls don’t even know how to hold a bat,” she said. “Now, just to see the look on their face when they do something good is more reward ing than anyone can imagine.” But a child’s accomplishment has to be greeted by parents on and off the field, Pennington believes. “The kids are so much more into it when their parents are involved,” the coach stated, adding this year to be the most influential in her short tenure as coach. Perry, from 7A who added that both were spot starters for the Panthers. "They will provide a lot of leadership." "This group hasn't really played a lot on the varsity level," said Thomas. However, the team's lack of ex perience should be noticeably im proved by the start of the basketball season. The Panthers will take squads to two basketball camps, one at Georgia College and the other at Middle Tennessee State. Over the course of the summer, the Panthers should play around 30 to 40 games. "That is like another year," said Thomas. "We have to find the niche to blend them into a team concept,” said Thomas. "What we are really trying to do is get a group of kids working together as a team." Westfield, from 7 A As important as depth is, it is not the only area that the Hornets will be working on during the spring. "We really want to improve our defense," said Massey. "Our defense let us down a couple of times last year." Also, Massey said the offensive side of the Hornet’s game needed Classic, from7A hole Perry Classic taking place July 18-19. Over 300 golfers are ex pected to participate in the three events. Players interested in playing in the Perry Classic should contact Perry Country Club golf profes sional Bill Hobbs at 987-5147. Also, businesses and individuals wishing to sponsor the tournament need to contact Hobbs at the club. The Perry Classic is a Georgia Section P.G.A. event Ike, fromTA While I often will acknowledge that sports are not that important in the grand scheme of the world, I also know that sports teach some very valuable lessons in life. For instance, sports teaches that you have to play until the end of the game, that teamwork is impor tant, that there has to be a goal, that there has to be a plan, that plans have to constantly be adjusted to changing conditions and chal lenges. Eisenhower looked over the white cliffs of England, toward the direction of France, and said in the early hours of June 4, "Ok, let’s go." 8, and will take place June 9,10,13 and 14. The second session will be hied from June 27-30 for males and females entering grades 3,4 and 5. The final session will take place July 11-14, for females entering grades 6,7 and 8. “I think the parent-kid involve ment has just been great. So many parents want to be involved in what’s going on in their kids’ lives, and it has shown in a lot of ways, from volunteer coaches, to score keepers, to fans.” And despite what some may ■fc:— A-.- % . The Panthers, known for their high tempo game, will be pushing the tempo even faster next season said Thomas. "We are very small," said Thomas, who said the team was one of die smallest he has had at Perry. "We are going to have a dif ficult time rebounding. Because of that, we are going to have to more uptempo, especially on defense, be cause of our size." "I'm cautiously optimistic," said Thomas of the next season. "It's early, and we are still trying to get some things accomplished. "It will be a challenge," said Thomas of getting his team ready for next year. "But, I'm looking forward to it." Next year, the Panthers will take a step down in classification from some work, particularly in consis tency. "We need to improve on our shooting," he said, adding that con sistency came and went in high school basketball. "But, I would like to get a little more consistent. "We need to get physically stronger,” said Massey. "A couple of teams really manhandled us last year." He noted that FPD, which will be in the Hornets region next year, was one of the teams that was more physical than the Hornets. Over the summer, the Hornets will see plenty of action, playing in a basketball camp at Georgia Col lege in Milledgeville in mid-July. Thomas said the move should help the Panthers this year. Also taking a step down in clas sification will be Dodge County, which will be in the same sub-re gion as Perry. The Indians finished second to the Panthers in the region last year with a young team. "They have a very young team," said Thomas. "They will be the fa vorite in our particular sub-region." Thomas said the Panthers could also look for West Laurens to be competitive next year. Houston County High School and Bleckley should also be competitive, he said. Even with the challenges of a new region, Thomas has high goals. "I would be disappointed with less than a first or second place finish." The Hornets should play 14 games in four days, perhaps even getting to play the Perry Panthers, who will also be attending the same camp. "That should be interesting," said Massey. Massey said that he was cau tiously optimistic about the up coming season. "We have a lot of kids who can play, and a lot of enthusiasm," said Massey. "But, it's way to early to think about how good we can be, especially going into a new re gion." RIPE OR FIRM PACKING HOUSE ANIMALS DOG AND CAT SITTING. I will keep your animals while you vacation.
