Freshwater rivers and lakes
Savannah River— Savannah River flow below
Augusta, Georgia is largely controlled by releases from
Clarks Hill (Strom Thurmond) Dam.
Hydropower needs dictate water release schedules
and often cause regular weekly river level fluctuations
during the summer fishing season. Angler success for
many species is impacted by changing river levels
which limits the number of days when fishing is "good".
Fishing is usually best when river levels drop below
the six foot mark on the USGS gauge at Clyo, Georgia.
Many anglers find that river oxbows and lakes provide
excellent fishing opportunities.
River oxbows created by the COE channel modifica
tions in the 1960 s are recognized as shared waters
under the reciprocal fishing agreement with South
Carolina. State boundaries did not change as a result
of these channel modifications, but rather run down the
middle of these oxbows. Anglers should refer to USGS
topographic maps and carefully identify the man-made
oxbows since some naturally-formed oxbows and lakes
exist, and are not covered by the reciprocal fishing
agreement.
The most recent fishing survey indicates that red
breast sunfish, channel catfish, black crappie and yel
low perch are most harvested by anglers fishing the
freshwater section of the Savannah River. Only one to
two percent of the total harvest was largemouth bass
which averaged one-and-one-quarter pounds per fish.
Fall electrofishing samples indicate that the
Savannah River largemouth bass population is doing
quite well with many fish in the one-and-one-half to five
pound weight class. Sampling also indicates that an
glers fishing for bass in 1994 may have more success
in the river area downstream of Cohen s Bluff, South
Carolina, to around Blues Springs, Georgia.
A four month creel census survey on the Savannah
River from the New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam
downstream to U.S. Hwy 17 bridge is scheduled to
begin on April 1, 1994.
Striped bass populations in the Savannah River
declined in the 1980 s because of reproductive failure
resulting from exposure of eggs and larvae to in
creased salinities in the harbor. This was due to the
operation of the Back River tide gate. This impact was
documented by Georgiy biologists in the 1980 s.
Concerned officials in Georgia and South Carolina
closed the season for the taking of striped and hybrid
bass downstream of New Savannah Bluff Lock and
Dam in an effort tn nrotect the remaining brood stock.
me rocus ot Georgia biologists since 1990 has been
on the restoration of the Savannah River striped bass
population. Removal of the Tide Gate from operation,
combined with closure of New Cut canal, were critical
measures in the success of this effort.
Rebuilding striped bass brood stock populations
through supplemental fingerling stockings is a current
fisheries management goal. The current fishing mora
torium will remain in effect until natural recruitment has
been established.

Hi
Get to Lake Sinclair early
Fishermen have been doing well
at Lake Sinclair this year as far as
bass fishing is concerned.
If you are looking for numbers
of bass in the pound to pound--and
a-half range, you can have a ball.
That is, however, if you arrive very
early.
The first couple of hours after
daylight are prime fishing hours.
Bass will be in the grass beds that
are found in just about every cove
on the lake. Then, after that, you
can move to fish the boat docks
that have a lot of brush underneath
them.
Don't pay a lot of attention to
the brush piles out around the docks
as the fish will start moving under
the docks as soon as the sun starts
getting bright. Of course, if it's
cloudy, then fish the brush piles
out away from the docks also.
In the early morning, bass are
being caught on the grass beds
mainly on trick worms and Texas
rigged lizards. Cast whichever com

fishing at two ponds, a
large pond stocked mainly
with catfish and a small

bream. Angling hours are
from 7 a.m. to dark, seven
days a week. There Is a $3
dally use fee, or a $25
season pass to fish at the
ponds.
Water and alcohol don't mix
In 1993, nine out of 109 boating
accidents in Georgia were alcohol
related and resulted in almost
SIO,OOO in damage.
Although this number may not
sound high, conservation rangers
enforcing laws on Georgia's water
ways made 432 Boating Under the
Influence (BUI) arrests, which saved
countless accidents from occurring.
The Department of Natural
Resources, Wildlife Resources
Division reminds those enjoying
the water to "Boat Sober" this
summer to help keep Georgia's wa
ters safe for everyone.
For many Georgians, drinking
and boating go hand in hand.
Boating is a great way to relax and
cut loose, but the effects of alcohol
can quickly turn a fun day into a
tragic day.
According to a national survey
conducted by the Boston University
School of Public Health, alcohol
contributes to many drownings

bination you choose into the grass,
working into the edge of the grass
to a couple of feet into the grass
beds.
Watch your line as soon as the
lure hits the water, since a lot of
times a bass will hit the lure im
mediately and start swimming off.
If you are fishing a trick lure,
wait until the you feel the bass on
the line before setting the hook.
Many times you will sec the fish
come up and take the worm. But,
you must wait until you feel him,
or you will miss setting the hook.
I've been using the same Texas
rigged lizard at the docks that I used
in the grass beds. I've also used a
Texas-rigged eight-inch worm for
fishing the boat docks.
Try to pitch the worm as close
to the brush as possible, and be
ready to set the hook immediately.
Don't waste any time, or the bass
will have you wrapped around
brush.
Also, fish the docks very

Alcohol increases risktaking and
decreases the skills and judgement
necessary to avoid life-threatening
situations. Furthermore, alcohol di
lates blood vessels and creates a
false sensation of warmth. This ef
fect may cause intoxicated swim
mers to stay in the water longer
which can lead to fatigue and in
creased risk of hypothermia.
Information processing is also
slowed by alcohol. Boaters under
the influence of alcohol cannot pro
cess signals from the environment
quickly enough to respond in an
emergency situation.
Should a passenger on the boat
fall overboard or a wake swamp the
boat, an impaired boater wiil lake
longer to respond than one who has

slowly, casting to each pole, cross
brace or anything else under the
dock or close to it. As long as the
sky stays cloudy, bass will not
move under the dock. Instead they
will just roam around. That is why
it is important to fish around the
dock.
If you are brave and stay past the
local getting up time and care to
challenge the jet skis roaring up and
down the lake, then move to the
points and ledges. Change to
Carolina-rigged lizards or large
worms.
Don't spend a lot of time on
these points and ledges. Make a
dozen or so casts, and if you don't

tion, and judgement all suffer when
boating and drinking are combined.

Other good baits to search for
bass with are Poe's 300 or 400 or
Bill Norman's DD 20 or DL 22.
Like I said earlier, you won't
catch a lot of big bass. But, then
again, you might just get lucky.
A guy, visiting the lake for the
very first time, caught an eight
pound, three ounce bass off the rip
rap at Little River Park. Needless to
say, I bet he will visit that exact
spot every time he comes to fish
the lake in the future.
I know that there are some large
bass in the lake, and several are
caught each year. The growing cy
cle must be slow due to the lack of
fertile water, which is a must to
produce a fast growing bass popula
tion.
Oh well, go and have fun catch
ing the little ones, and you might
get lucky.
Until next time . . . we've gone
fishing.
