Ancient beans are
growing in Perry
Perryans planted 1,000 year old beans
By PAULINE LEWIS
Staff Writer
Woodrow and Eloise Rush of
Perry are Mission Campers, and as
such, travel all over the United
States. A couple of years ago, they
were in Alaska on such a trip and
upon their return, stopped at a
campground at Gothenburg,
Nebraska.
Nearby was a private Sod House
Museum having a little garden
growing unusual beans. . .so
unusual, in fact, the Rush's decided
to get some for themselves...
Merle Block, manager of the Sod
House Museum, told the story of
the beans. Old dried beans were
found in a basket in a Cliff
Dwelling in Utah and were thought
to be around 1,000 years old. The
college in Greeley, Colorado did the
germination work.
"The beans are edible," Brock said.
"The man who gave the beans to
me said that they have no name and
I would guess that they are four or
five generations old (from the num
ber of crops since the finding).
When the Rushes got home,
Woodrow kept thinking about those
beans. He wrote to Mr. Brock at
the Sod House Museum and asked
for some of the beans; Mr. Brock
sent him one bean pod with two
beans in it.
Woody's good friend, John
Newton, is a former USDA em
ployee and can grow anything.
Woody gave the beans to John and
asked him to see what he could do
with them.
John planted the two seeds in the
flower bed space across the back of
his house on Sparrow Road. The
plants bore 200-300 bean seeds
which John saved and planted this
year. He now has two long rows of
lovely bean plants which he has
staked and they are now bearing
beans. Last week they picked the
beans and Eloise Rush shelled,
cooked and shared them with John
and Bobbie Newton.
The unusual things about these
beans is that the dried beans are dark
purple with little lavender specks
The pods are similar to large butter

beans except they are fuzzy instead
of being smooth.
When the pods are ready to shell,
a colorful surprise awaits. The
beans are a hot flamingo pink in
hue and are thick like fat butter
beans. The blossoms grow in clus
ters and are of a bright orange-red in
color that makes hummingbirds
think they have found bird heaven.
A follow-up on the cooked beans
resulted from my encounter with
the Newtons at church Sunday
evening.
John, with a straight face, said,"l
didn't like them." He couldn't tell
me exacdy why he didn't like them,
but Bobbie said, "I didn't like them
- they had a 'bitter' taste."
Our current domesticated beans
have probably developed over gen
erations, weeding out any bitterness
they may have had, and the "Indian
Beans" will just have to "catch up"
in the flavor department. In the
meantime, they are a colorful cu
riosity which I enjoyed seeing.

Perryan develops
air unit that is
ozone friendly
The world's first chlorine-frec,
non-ozone depleting central air
conditioner for residential use has
been introduced by Carrier
Corporation. Announcement of the
new air conditioner, called the
Weathcrmaker 134 a (Model 38TN),
was made here by Jimmy Holland
of Perry Heating & Cooling, a
local Carrier dealership.
Holland stated that the new
Ozone-friendly air conditioner
would be available in June for
installation in area homes. "This
new- air conditioner," he continued,
"represents a major step in meeting
environmental regulations that
require phasing out of all ozone
depleting chlorine in residential air
conditioners."
In addition to its "ozone
friendliness,” the Carrier
Weathcrmaker 134 a is a high
efficiency cooling unit with a
Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio
(SEER) range of 11.5 up to 13.0 It
is also one of the quietest air
conditioners on the market, having
a sound rating of only 7.6 BELs.
