Sonny Perdue has been appointed to study education State Senator Sonny Perdue of Bonaire has been reappointed by Lieutenant Governor Pierre Howard to chair a special legislative study committee created to address the need for improved coordination among Georgia's higher education programs. The Senate Study Committee for a Seamless Education System was reestablished by the 1994 General Assembly, under legislation sponsored by Perdue, to continue the efforts begun by a similar committee last year. Sen. Perdue said the panel will move forward with its examination of the postsecondary education programs that are offered through the University System and the Department of Technical and Adult Education. He said it is "essential" that the programs and courses offered through the two postsecondary education systems be coordinated to maximize their benefits and to avoid duplication and unnecessary spending. "The University System and the Technical Adult Education Department have separate missions and they do an excellent job in carrying them out," said Perdue. "But they both share the responsibility for providing good educations and preparing people to be productive citizens able to compete for jobs." "I think it's important that we help to facilitate this goal," Perdue added. "We're fortunate to have the opportunity to make a very good postsecondary education system even better." Sen. Perdue noted that both literacy and technical competence are required to successfully compete for jobs. Perdue said the committee’s efforts are especially timely because of the increased revenues that are being directed to education such as the HOPE Scholarship Program. He also noted the rapidly expanding technology that has become available to Georgia schools including sattelite technology that links educational institutions throughout the state. Area public colleges and vo-tech schools include Macon College, Middle Georgia College in Cochran, the Macon Area Vocational and Technical School, and Middle Georgia Technical Institute in Warner Robins. Perdue was also apointed to the Senate Study Committee on Core Knowledge for Education which will consider ways to strengthen and more clearly define the basic curriculum taught in Georgia's elementary schools. The committees are expected to submit their findings and recommendations to the 1995 General Assembly in January.
