PACKING HOUSE]
The difference
between types
of cardboard
How can I say this folks? There
is cardboard and then there is
corrugated cardboard. Happy Hour
collects, bales and sells mostly
corrugated cardboard containers.
They have tried to deal with the
variety of cardboard that people
leave at the drop-off site. But to
pick by hand the small vanilla
bottle boxes, aspirin tablet bottle
boxes, toothpaste tube boxes, Lean
Cuisine boxes, soap bar boxes,
toilet paper and papter towel tubes,
and a really amazing variety of
small cardboard packaging, is just
getting to be too much. Then these
little boxes do not bale well. They
slip out the sides of the baler and
can ruin an otherwise nice tight
bale. Even handling them in the
baling area is a major hassle.
Bobcat front end loaders try to
scoop the little boxes up, but they
tend to avoid capture. So,
unfortunately, most of them end up
where they should have gone in the
first place, the garbage and then to
the landfill.
So please, we know you are
trying to show good faith in
recycling cardboard, but the
capabilities of the Happy Hour

collection and processing system
just are not up to dealing with such
small boxes. Even cereal and
laundry soap boxes ard difficult for
them to handle. Corrugated
cardboard containers are what works
for the Happy Hour program. And
when you flatten them it is even
better. The clients with limited
skills work hard, enjoy and are
proud of what they do and they
deserve your support. Take an extra
moment to flatten the corrugated
boxes, and keep the paper, glass and
cans coming too. It is for a good
cause and saves 25 to 30 tons of
trash from being landfilled each
month.
