Higher Ground holds softball camps
Higher Ground of Tifton will be holding several
girls softball camps in the Middle Georgia area. The
camps are for both fast pitch and slow pitch softball.
Higher Ground will be in Columbus from June 27-
29, holding a day camp for both fast pitch and slow
pitch softball. Cost is SBS per day. On June 30, there
will be a one day camp for fast pitch pitchers and
catchers in Columbus. Cost is S2O-30. Each camp
starts at 7:30 a.m. Both camps are open to girls age
eight through 18.
Two camps will be held in Tifton in July. From
July 10-14, there will be a camp for individuals and
teams. The residence fee for the camp is $225, while

Giants. It was that year I became a
Dodger hater.
For his play that year, Murphy
was chosen as the National League
MVP, hitting .281 with 36 dingers
and 109 RBIs.
In 1983, Murph had a better sea
son, breaking the .300 mark, again
hitting 36 taters, and driving in 121
RBIs. And, with 30 steals, he be
came a member of a very select
club of people who combined
power with speed and base running
skills.
Again, it was Torre’s Braves and
Lasorda's Dodgers battling for the
divisional title. Again, the battle
was bitter, with outcome waiting
until the final week of the season.
However, this time it was the
Dodgers that came out on top, by
three games. My hatred of the
Dodgers grew.
Even though the Braves were de
nied their second pennant, Murph
repeated as league MVP.
His best year, however, came in
1987, when the Braves just avoided
losing 100 games, finishing 20.5
games behind the Giants. But Mur
phy did not seem to notice the los
ing, missing the .300 mark by
three hits and five points. The
Murph was at his best, dialing long
Tigers, from 7A
by the Cubs to win the Mite Boys
game 10-8.
Down 104, the Cubs mounted a
two out comeback to draw to
within two in the bottom half of
the fourth.
Zack Yasin led the inning off,
getting hit by a pitch. However, the
next two batters struck out.
T.J. Hutchens followed with a
clutch single. Ben Erwin also sin
gled to plate Yasin. Hutchens
scored on an error by the Tiger
shortstop. Ed Rosner followed with
a walk. Erwin and Rosner scored on
A 1 Thornton's single. A walk to
Chris Dvaneport put the tieing run
on base.
However, the Tigers came out
with the win, inducing the final
Cubs player to ground out to short.
Keyed by two Ben Mishra sin
gles in the first and second, the
Tigers jumped out to an early 8-2
lead. They would two insurance
runs in the top of the fourth to ce
ment the win.
Again, it was Mishra starting
the inning for the Tigers, reaching
on his third hit of the game. A
triple by Morris Johnson drove
Mishra in. One out alter Dante
Williams doubled to center to score
Johnson.
Mishra paced the Tigers with
three hits. Williams and Dexter
Beatton had two hits each. Johnson

The losing squad in the
Pennington-Graffiti match-up was
scheduled to play the winner of the
Family Footwear-First Family
Finance contest today at 6 p.m.
The winner of the Graffiti-
Pennington showdown was to be
idfe until Thursday at 6 p.m., when
it would face off against
Wednesday’s winning team.
Thursday’s action could possibly
result in a two-game format if the
one team entering the title game
with one loss were to get past the
undefeated team. That scenerio
would demand a second game to
crown the tourney champion.

distance 44 times, driving in 105
runs, crossing the plate personally
115 times, having an on-base per
centage of .414, and stealing 16
bases.
I honestly believe that Murphy
would have had better offensive
stats if he did not play for the
Braves in the late 80s. I still re
member reading a preseason base
ball magazine that said something
like this, "The good news for the
Braves is that they signed Dale
Murphy. The bad news is that he
can't pitch.”
It soon became obvious to ev
eryone that Murphy was the only
weapon the Braves had. If the
Braves were going to win a game,
it pretty much came down to
whether or not Murphy would win
the game. Without anyone to pro
tect him, pitchers started pitching
around Murphy, not giving him
anything to hit.
Unfortunately, Murphy also real
ized that he was the Braves only
real chance to win. He started press
ing, started going after what was of
fered. And, his stats suffered. And, I
think, so did his swing.
Murphy was never the hitter that
he was before after the disaster of of
the late 80s. I honestly believe that
added iwo walks to one hit for three
safeties in three trips to the plate.
A 1 Thornton had two hits to
pace the Cubs, while Erwin had a
perfect day at the plate with a single
and two walks.
Indians 18, Storm 4
The Indians put 10 runs across
the plate to cruise to an 18-4 win
over the Storm.
Jessica Short paced the Indians
with three hits. Carla Brock had
two dingers, while Maggie Attaway
had a third inning homer.
Brandi Watson had two hits to
pace the Storm.
Vols 10, Bears 4
The Vols scored seven runs in
the third and fourth to cruise to a
104 win over the Bears.
Candice Robinson had three hits
to pace the Vols. Dienna Plummer,
Heather Longfid, Katherine, Me
laugh, Brette Ridings and Jennifer
Webb had two hits each for the
Bears. . , _
The Bears collected only five
hits in the game, with Liza Mc-
Daniel leading the way with two
safeties. Latonia Gilbert, Jia

if the Braves were better, just a m
tle bit better, Murphy's stats would
be HOF quality.
And, lest we forget, Murphy was
not only an offensive star. For
years, the Gold Glove in centerfield,
and later rightfield, has his name on
it. Murphy was a master of taking
hits away in center, and he had a
catcher’s cannon at the position.
Also, unlike many of today’s
stars, Murphy was durable. He
holds the 12th longest consecutive
game streak in Major League base
ball, playing in 740 consecutive
games, more than any other Brave
in franchise history. That is the
equivalent of playing four-and-a-half
seasons without taking a day off.
I hope Murphy gets into the
Hall of Fame. I think that he be
longs there. If such one dimen
sional players as Reggie Jackson
are judged worthy, than Murphy,
who brought many weapons to the
park, is also worthy.
But, if his name never graces a
plaque at Cooperstown, it was a
great moment when his number
was retired. For in one of the dark
ages of Atlanta Braves baseball, for
well over a decade, Murphy was a
true light.
