Appeals judge seeking re-election visits Perry
BY BRENDA THOMPSON
Staff Writer
Judge J.D. Smith of Gainesville,
a candidate for a full term on the
Georgia Court of Appeals, brought
his campaign to Perry Tuesday
afternoon.
Accompanying him to the Hous
ton County Courthouse was local
attorney Billy Jerles.
“I’m visiting as many counties
as I can,” Judge Smith said as he
shook the hands of the many voters
Jerles introduced him to. “Next
week, I’ll be in Carrollton, Macon,
Columbus and Athens.”
Appointed by Governor Zell
Miller in May 1993, Judge Smith
has spent the past 13 months serv
ing on the Georgia Court of Ap
peals. The upcoming July 19 non
partisan primary will be the first
leg of his race for a first full term
on the court. He is being opposed
by Sonja Salo, an Atlanta attorney.
Before his appointment to the
Georgia Appellate Court, Judge
Smith was Chief Judge of the Su
perior Courts of the Northeastern
Judicial Circuit. He won election to
the superior court bench in 1984,
took office on January 1, 1985 and
was re-elected without opposition
in 1988 and 1992.
In commenting on his election
campaign, Judge Smith said, “I first
became a superior court judge by
winning a contested election ten
years ago, and I’m convinced that
experience made me a better trial
judge, more sensitive to the needs
and concerns of the people I served.
