The city extends an invitation to all who trace their heritage to this beautiful little middle Georgia town in the north eastern portion of Macon County; as well as to those who love history, festivals and returning to yesteryear for a brief interlude. Located on the Andersonville Trail (Hwy 49) the city is well known for the Crape Myrtles which are planted on both sides of the road approaching from the south. These plantings along with beautiful camellias, dogwoods and ancient oaks which line the streets in front of grand old homes give evidence to the fact that beauty and horticulture have always been significant to the people of this region. Come, experience the warm hospitality which abounds in true southern tradition! Settled in the mid 1820’s, Marshallville remains a rural farming community, the names of its early families still prevail as some fourth generations and adopted “newcomers” continue to farm the rich earth surrounding the area. A place of culture and hospitality, its heritage is rich due to the statewide and regional contributions of its citizens for the past 170 years. She attended her class's 10th reunion at Westfield last Saturday, and will participate in the enter tainment portion of the Miss Georgia Pageant in Columbus next weekend. Some 3,000 crape myrtles along with with 3,000 camellias and three million daffodils were planted. Remnants of those early planting enhance the beauty of the area today with their prolific seasonal blooms. Marshallville has long been listed on the National Register of Historic places! To celebrate her heritage and to encourage interest in the restoration and preservation of her historical areas the city embarks on its second annual Crape Myrtle Festival. July 2, 1994. This one day festival will include: An Arts and Crafts Fair with well received vendors from all over the state; a flea market full of exciting bargains; a fiercely competitive Softball Tournament made up of co-ed teams; a special museum display of area artifacts loaned by local residents just for the festival; an Antique Auto Show; and old book sale; a super Kids’ Zone with rides; entertainment to please a wide variety of tastes; and a Baking Contest featuring old-time favorites-chocolate cake, pecan pie and peach desserts! In addition there will be plenty of southern delicacies to tempt and cool visitors such as homemade peach icecream, lemonade, baked goods from the Marshallville Cookbook submitted by some of Marshallville’s finest building on Carroll Street, the pro gram is free and recommended for families with children ages seven to 14. The two-hour workshop explores expressive portrait painting through on June 13. He was received into full connection to the annual con ference. On Wednesday, June 15, at 5:30 p.m. at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church, Macon, Andrew UMC was recognized for being the Church of the Year for the Macon District. mm Dianne and Ronnie Scruggs have returned from a two-week European trip to England and Scotland. They enjoyed live theatre, "Phantom of the Opera" at Her Majesty Theatre and "Les Miserables" at Palace Theater in London. In Cambridge, England, they ran into Dr. Dan Callahan of Warner Robins and Bub Way of Hawkinsville, who had flown a DC-3 over for D-Day. It was the only known DC-3 origi nally used in the Normandy Invasion. In York, England, they saw the wall around the city which was built about 71 A.D. At Cheltenham, they spent the night at the manor estate De La Terra, which is over 500 years old (built in 1485). They returned to the church where they were married in England, and visited Edinburgh, Scotland. Nationally exhibiting artist and teacher Linda Henneman will show examples of her own portrait paintings and lead Veteran encourages others to fight for health care rights Unless veterans stand together and present a united effort they can expect the availability of medical care and financial entitlements to be reduced, Commissioner of Veterans Affairs Pete Wheeler told the attendees at the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States state convention. Wheeler said that the administration’s current budget calls for a loss of 4,000 jobs in VA health care employees during fiscal year 1995 and over 25,000 personnel would be cut over the next five years. “These cuts could not come at a more inopportune time,” Wheeler said. “Under health care reform, the VA will have to compete with commercial service providers. With current staffing levels, VA hospitals and outpatient clinics cannot provide services to all veterans who now seek care,” the Commissioner stated. “How can the VA compete in the future if its resources are reduced.” The commissioner said that legislation passed by the House of beauty of this small town USA and its pastoral setting, relive a little of the past, see old friends and join in the celebration of her heritage and her promising future.
