risning the deeper water where there Is structure can be just as productive as fish
ing along the shoreline.
Fishing deep water with
structure results in large bass
The mere mention of deep water
structure puts a trembling scare into
a lot of hot weather fishermen.
Whether you are fishing for
bass, bluegill, shellcracker or crap
pie, the fact still holds true that, in
order to be successful in catching
quality size fish in hot weather, you
must think deep water structure.
River channel bends, creek chan
nels, high spots, long underwater
spots may all fall into this cate
gory. All of these areas may, or
may not, hold fish.
The one key ingredient that each
of these areas must have in order to
produce catchable fish is some sort
of structure. Rocks, stumps, trees,
brush piles, manmade or natural,
old bridge pilings, road beds, etc. —
anything that will give the fish
some sort of sanctuary and ambush
point will do for structure.
When the water temperature
climbs into the 80s and 90s, the
bass, as well as other species of
fish, seek the deeper water for cool
ness. Being cold blooded, fish must
seek the best temperature zone for
them. In hot weather, fish escape
the heat, going into the cooler, deep
water.
A lot of tournament anglers will
not fish the deeper water, relying on
the early feeding periods for their
catch. Sometimes, it will pay off;
but. more than likely, the larger
bass, and the more catchable bass,
PFD regulations change on fed water
Effective immediately, class A
vessels, which are boats less than
16 feet in length, must be equipped
with one type I, II or 111 wearable
personal flotation device (PFD), or
lifejacket, for each person on board,
says the Georgia Department of
Natural Resources.
The change in regulations comes
from the U.S. Coast Guard, and is
for boats operated in "federal" wa
ters only.
Federal waters in Georgia include
the Ocmulgee River from Macon
downstream to the Altamaha River;
the Chattahoochee River from
Peachtree Creek in Fulton County
downstream to the Florida state
line, including West Point Reser-

and decided to offer me a couple of
million dollars to do little for them
(i.e. Major League baseball to the
players), I would take the money
and run, also. But, I would find it
very, very hard to find reason to go
on strike.
And, that's the rub, that's why I
can’t and won't support the players.
They make far too much money to
go on strike. It really boggles my
mind when I see someone working
will be in the deeper water.
The other week when Susanne
and I won the Lake Sinclair Guys
and Dolls tournament, we were
catching fish out of 15-20 feet of
water. During practice, Susanne
caught a bass over seven pounds.
During the tournament, we caught
about 10 fish, with all of them
coming out of the deep water.
Twenty feet is not the deepest
we have caught bass. On Lake Eu
faula we have caught bass in water
as deep as 35 feet before, and have
heard of some bass over there com
ing out of 40 feet of water. Many
of you would never believe that fish
could be caught that deep.
Several years back, we were over
on Eufaula during the first week of
July. We met a man and his wife
who lived right at the mouth of
Patuala Creek.
One afternoon, he invited us up
to their patio for some cool re
freshments. While we were there he
showed us a cooler that contained
about 20-30 crappie that looked
alike, and probably weighed three
quarters to one pound each. He had
voir, Lake Walter F. George,
Columbia Lake and Lake Seminole;
the Flint River from Crawford
County downstream to Lake Semi
nole, including Lake Blackshear and
Lake Worth; the Savannah River in
its entirety and all impoundments,
including Lake Hartwell, Lake Rus
sell, and Clarks Hill Lake; the
Oconee River from Lake Sinclair
downstream to the Altamaha River;
the Altamaha River in its entirety;
all tidal rivers on the Georgia coast,
including the Ogeechee River and
the St. Mary's River; and all costal
waters.
Statistics from the U.S. Coast
Guard indicate nearly 80 percent of
people killed in boating accidents

for minimum wage at a job where
the working conditions are really
horrible that a professional athlete,
living in a mansion, driving expen
sive automobiles, making millions
a year, can have the unmitigated
gall to say he is mistreated.
I say lets take every professional
athlete and put them them on a
farm for a summer or two in the
hot Georgia sun. 1 can almost guar-
caught them night fishing in about
60 feet of water where the creek
empties into the river. At first I
found this hard to believe, but after
that night we were believers.
Like I wrote earlier, the key in
gredient is structure. When you find
an area that fils, such as a ledge or
high spot, then start looking for
structure. When you find it, look
tor bait fish above the structure. Be
low the baitfish, you will find your
bonanza.
When you find a deep spot with
structure but there aren't any bait
fish around, don't give up. Refer
ence the area in your mind or on a
map and be sure to return at a dif
ferent time of the day. The baitfish
will move in, and so will the bass.
Water current also plays an im
portant role in locating catchable
fish. When there is a current, such
as the current produced from the
generators in electrical production,
the fish will move to shallower wa
ter and go into a feeding mode.
During the times when the cur
rent is flowing, you can load the
boat in a hurry. However, the ac
tion can stop just as quickly.
When the current stops, the feed
ing stops, and the fish move back
into deep water. You'll have to fol
low them and slow down your pre
sentation.
Structure and deep water together
can make a mighty good combina
tion for some good fishing.
were not wearing PFD's. In order
for PFDs to work, they must be
worn, and worn correctly. Make
sure the PFDs fitted and adjusted for
the person who will be wearing it.
Always wear a PFD in rough
water or threatening weather. Fur
thermore, children and non-swim
mers should wear a PFD at all
times. (Editors note: PFDs should
be worn by everybody at all times
when on the water.)

the change in the regulations related
to PFDs for boats less than 16 feet

antee you that there will be less
complaining about making a
measly $500,000 a year after that
summer.
I would hope that if the players
went on strike, the owners would
bring up some players who wanted
to play. If the owners played along
with the players, allowing the game
to go into hiatus, then fans should
not ever patronize the games again.
