Reflecting on
what is right
with America
The rate of crime continues to
climb. The dollar plummets even
lower in international markets.
Politicians are no longer trusted as
stories of indictments and
misappropriations become
increasingly common. From sea to
shining sea, trouble is seen on
almost every front. Some people
will look at the current status of the
country and ask, “What’s wrong
with America?” But on this
Independence Day Weekend, I think
a more appropriate question is
What’s Right with America?
Freedom is what’s right with
America. When our forefathers met
in the Second Continental Congress
in 1776, they voiced a cry for
freedom. Tneir vision was to birth
a nation that was not only
independent and sovereign but also
free. For the past 218 years, we
have been the envy of the world.
From the jungles of Nicaragua to
the streets of Romania to the
bloodbath of Tiananman Square, the
cry has been the same-let us be
free! We Americans enjoy a
blessing that others still long for.

Answers to some common questions investors often ask
Anything you do with your
money-including just leaving it
where it is now-is an investment
decision. If you have some money
in a bank or money market fund,
own some mutual fund shares or
old savings bonds, then you are an
investor, even if you don’t think of
yourself as one.
As an investor, you should have
many investment questions. These
are some answers to questions
investors often ask.
Q: How do I determine my
goals?
A: Be honest and realistic.
What do you want to accomplish
and how quickly? If your objective
is to double your money in one
year with no risk to your capital,
you have set unrealistic goals. But
doubling your money in five or six

We must never forget how
blessed our nation is. I proudly fly
the American flag on my house
each Independence Day to represent
my patriotism and my thanksgiving
to God. There are still many things
wrong with America, but on this
Fourth of July we need to proudly
rise with a star spangled banner of
faith and proclaim to the world that
we are still free.
Freedom for Change is what’s
right with America. People often
refer to our nation with the curt
saying love it or leave it! I think a
better saying about America would
be love it or change it! Perhaps no
country on earth has the capacity
and ability to change like America.
Open elections, public forums,
political debates, and the freedom of
the individual all enable us to make
this country what we want it to be.
If you don’t like something that is
happening, then do something
about it. We have the freedom to
change, and that’s what is right
with America!

Q: A friend just told me about a
great investment. Should I buy
too?
A: Don’t be swayed by the ideas
and strategies of friends or relatives
just because you have similar life
styles or are in the same tax
bracket. Be sure to consider:
length of time until retirement,
number of dependents, expenses,
temperament and attitude toward
risk and time available to monitor
your investment. You can
immediately see why each person’s
investment plan must be
individually tailored.
Q: What information should I
gather to start building an
investment plan?
A: Among other things you
should determine your tax bracket.

Q: How much of my current
investment situation is my personal
financial consultant going to want
to know about?
A: Sometimes people are
reluctant to divulge information,
but a financial consultant cannot
advise you properly with only half
of the facts. For example, if you’re
wondering what to do with some
money coming due from a maturing
CD, he or she will need to know
just how much money is involved
and how long before you’ll need it
before advising on how best to
reinvest it.

A: To make sure your
investment decisions are right for
you, you may want to seek out a
full-service brokerage firm for
guidance. Be aware that your
satisfaction will depend totally on
your relationship with your
financial consultant.
There are generally two types of
financial consultants-those who are
trading oriented and those who
emphasize longer-term investments.
If you consider yourself an active
investor, find a financial consultant
who aggressively searches out buy
and sell opportunities. But if you
don’t like to trade or have a
relatively small account, you will
probably do best with a financial
consultant who explains all the
investment options, sees that
