Sports Westfield and Perry make good decisions I think both Westfield and Perry have done well with their selections for softball coaches. Kelly Briisky, the new Perry ' coach, played for Warner Robins High School and, in a certain sense, will be returning home. After a standout high school career, she went on to ABAC, where she gained national recognition and won a national championship, and then to LaGrange, where she was named to the All-Conference team. She . was also a graduate assistant on the LaGrange team that won the N.A.I.A. national championship. Billy Sellers also brings some impressive credentials to Westfield. As a baseball coach, his teams went 33-21, winning a region title last year, as he was named Middle Ge orgia Coach-of-the-Year. Although there are some key differences be tween softball and baseball, notably the way the ball is delivered to the plate and base running rules, soft ball is based on the game of base ball, so there are a lot of similari ties. His record as women's basketball head coach is a little misleading. At Miller County, his first team had one player out of ten who had played the game before. Such teams take their lumps, and that team fin ished 0-26. However, at the end of the season, his teams were competi tive. High school basketball is not the place to have players leam on the job. It should be an interesting sea son for both schools next year. *** * * I always get worried when sports fans go a little bit too far, since lit tle in the world of sports really af fects the happenings in the real world. However, two recent events point out how far some people take their sports—the murdet-of Andres Athletic grants available to many students each year Over 100,000 athletic scholar- 1 ships are available each year for high school and junior college ath letes, reports Joe Tirrell of the Na tional Sports Foundation. Tirrell says that many of these scholarships go unclaimed. ."Contrary to popular belief," said Tirrell, "students don't have to be all state to qualify (for the scholar ships." A new publication with forms,' sample letters and tables of factual information is available for student athletes, said Tirrell. He said it took students step-by-step through the process of getting an athletic schol arship, and included college and conference listings. For information on how to get a college athletic scholarship, send a self addressed, business-sized, stamped envelop to the National Sports Foundation, 611 A Willow Drive, P.O. Box 940, Oakhurst, NJ. 07755. Editors nott'.There was no mention of cost in the news release containing this information. It is disturbing to me that people put so much emphasis on sports, when sports really do not matter, are really not that important. One of my common themes on this page is that things need to be kept in prospective. Sports are to be fun; and, they are to teach lessons of life. However, when we get the games out of perspective, we take the fun out. *** * * The American Bald Eagle seems to be back from the edge of extinc tion. The eagle is even making a comeback to the skies of the Southeast. In the 1993 census, just under 1,000 eagles were flying in the Southeast, with 17 making their home in Georgia.
