Frances Couey remembered by friends
By PAULINE LEWIS
Staff Writer
Miss Frances Couey, long-time
resident of Perry, was laid to rest in
the picturesque Evergreen Cemetery
Sunday afternoon, July 3.
Her friends and former pupils had
gathered earlier at Perry United
Methodist Church to pay respect to
this lady who had given her life to
teaching the children of others.
Many of the fine citizens of Perry,
their children and grandchildren,
grew up under the guidance and in
struction of "Miss Couey". For 42
years, she gave her service to public
schools and was the first principal
of Tucker Elementary School in
Perry.
Her work with children extended
to her church, where she worked in
the children's church Sunday School
Department for many years. She
was a faithful member of Perry
United Methodist Church and the
Susannah Wesley Sunday School
Class. She supported her church's
activities and missions, and be
friended those about her.
Miss Couey had prepared well for
her career. She was a graduate of
Georgia Teachers College in
Statesboro and received a master's

degree from Mercer University in
Macon. She was a charter member
of Alpha Lambda Chapter of Delta
Kappa Gamma Society.
She was born in Whitfield
County, Georgia, the daughter of
Joel E. and Minnie Rogers Couey.
Her home on Duncan Avenue is
one of the historic homes in Perry
and was the Couey home from the
time her mother bought it when
Frances was a young person.
Frances Couey's last days were
spent at Autumn Terrace; however,
her long-time maid, Thelma
Coleman, kept the Couey home
neat, her house plants watered, ran
errands and provided other personal
services for her. Of Miss Couey,
Coleman said, "She was a nice,
kind lady."
A neighbor and fellow school
teacher, Mrs. Luther (Billie)
Mosteller, said, "Frances was my
co-worker when I first came to
Perry in 1946. She was a very
good teacher, making sure that ev
ery child achieved to their very best
potential each day. She has been
my neighbor since 1949 and was
always willing to help in every way
she could.

Couey, "During her career as a

was determined that her students
have a solid foundation. She was
the kind of teacher remembered by
many as the most important in
their school years. She had a
continuing interest in her students
and followed their activities ail of
her life. My mother (Gladwyn
Barfield) had the privilege of
teaching with, and for, her for many
years. I can remember Mother's
disappointment when I was drawn
out of Miss Frances’ room due to
over-crowding 41 years ago."
