Forum, from 1 A speakers’ podium were Republican James Carter of Kathleen, Democrat Billy Hunter of Bonaire, Democrat Ronald Wayne Ragin of Perry and Republican Nora Reese Laughlin, Republican John F. “Jack” Wylam and Democrat Randy E. Wynn, all of Warner Robins. During the forum each candidate was given five minutes apiece for personal campaigning afterwhich the floor was opened up for a brief question and answer session between the Devonwood residents in attendance and the candidates. During this session a number of primary concerns surfaced and were addressed by the candidates, the is sues seemingly nearest and dearest to the Devonwood population’s heart being the need for more planning and zoning for county subdivisions and the need for more law enforcement county-wide. Having worked closely with the Houston County Sheriff’s Depart ment over the past year in estab lishing the subdivision’s Neighbor hood Watch program, one resident said that she has discovered that the geographic areas assigned to the sh eriff s deputies on patrol are just too large to be handled. “There just isn’t any way they can do it all,” the lady resident said. “I think we need additional law en forcement patrol staff and I hope that whoever is elected will address that.” In answering this concern, each candidate agreed and pointed out that the new $20.5 million county bud get which was to be approved at this Tuesday morning’s meeting of the county commission is to in clude money for the hiring of addi tional deputies for the coming fiscal year. On the issue of planning and zoning, one male resident indicated that he felt perhaps there had not been enough control taken by the county and its planning and zoning commission when the Devonwood neighborhood was built. The resident indicated that, if the Foundation is accepting HOPE grant proposals The Community Foundation of Central Georgia is now accepting grant proposals to work with potential HOPE scholars at any level. Proposals must directly or indirectly help Central Georgia students be in a position to capitalize on the state's post-high school tuition waiver pro gram. Coordinated and collaborative efforts are encouraged. W. Ray Harris, Perry, a representative of the fraternal life insurance society with home offices in Rock Island, 111., is sponsoring the club. Harris said the club will be the 44th club in the state.
