- Saturday, July 16,1994" H0u5t0n Timee-Joumal Page 10A S Michael L Froehlich I Agricenter Executive Director | July Fourth celebration is a big hit Big Bang Boom was a tremendous success. More than 25,000 people attended this first annual Independence Day Celebration at the Agricenter on July 2. A special thanks to Charles Cox (the Agricenter’s food and beverage contract holder) for production of this event and the many sponsors that made it possible. Plans are already under way for Big Bang Boom 11. The second annual Big Bang boom promises to be even more spectacular than the first Big Bang boom was a fitting conclusion to a very successful fourth year of Agricenter operations and a great way to begin our sth anniversary year. The Agricentcr opened in June of 1990 and since that time more than 2,097,000 people have visited and/or participated in Agricenter events. 511 events representing 1,050 event days have been held at the facility. The economic impact from Agricenter activities during its first four years has been estimated to be between $73 million dollars and $157 million dollars. The range depends on the per day dollar multiplier used (an average of $35 dollars per day on the low end versus an average of $75 dollars per day on the high end). Agricenter visitors have come from 49 of the United States and 19 foreign nations, the most recent from Germany. At a recent Fair Managers meeting I had the opportunity to attend a seminar entitled “From Fairgrounds to Olympics” conducted by Colin Sanders, the manager of the Sydney Royal Easter Show. The Sydney Royal Easter Show is a fair located in New South Wales, Australia. The fairgrounds of the Sydney Royal Easter Show is being relocated to make room for the main venue of the Olympic Games to be held in Sydney in the year 2000. In his comments Mr. Sanders said he visited fairgrounds and exposition facilities throughout the world and that there were two facilities which contributed to the design of his new fairgrounds--a facility in South Africa and the Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter in Perry. People from around the world are not only visiting the Agricenter, they are also taking our ideas back home with them. Each and every Georgian has every right to be proud of the Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter. “Georgia, this is your facility.” It is a great place for people and a great place for our state. We know the Agricenter is doing well and we know it can do even better. With the fair fast approaching, the staff and I are busy making preparations for this year’s sth Anniversary Celebration of the Georgia National Fair, October 7 through 16. In future articles I will be letting you know about all the new and exciting events planned for this year’s fair. If you have any questions, please call us at 800/YUR-FAIR toll free in Georgia only) or 912/987-3247. Come visit and remember it is only 86 days to the fair. Lobbyist, from 1A no duty to inquire as to whether a particular individual should be registered as a lobbyist or in fact is properly registered with the state. The State Ethics Commission has that responsibility. However, since this could cause a great deal of aggravation for some members of the public, it is important that the public understands that the local lobbying requirements are not an initiative of local government, but instead were proposed and enacted by the slate legislature. At the ACCG Annual Meeting in Savannah on this subject, the commissioners in attendance recommended that ACCG prepare a sign in the form of a public notice that could be posted in the courthouse or administrative building where meetings are held. The purpose of the sign would be to put the public on notice of the new local lobbying requirements and that they may be subject to it and its penalties. This sign has been posted in the Houston County Annex building. Here’s how you can help our Georgia flood victims With the first rainfall last week, United Way of Central Georgia’s member agencies in flood affected areas sprang to action with immediate relief for victims and planning for provision of services for long-term needs. American Red Cross Central Georgia and Houston-Middle Georgia Chapters were early in establishing emergency shelters and service centers for flood victims. Red Cross officials estimate that more than 600 homes in the Central Georgia region sustained damage, and are still in the process of assessing damage for relief funds. The Salvation Army continues to provide basic necessities to flood victims, including food, clothing, shelter, and financial assistance. Ballots, from 1A Stan Wise. John Oxendine will run unopposed for Commissioner of Red Cross, from 1A remain open. “Some of the water is beginning to recede right now,” said Barbara Kozak, family coordinator for the Red Cross, “so we’ll continue until the demand (for food) has gone.” Special service centers have been designated at each city. Those residents affected by the flood are asked to converse with case workers to obtain special assistance. Locally, disaster victims can meet with Red Cross officials at the Heritage Building in the north gate at the Georgia National Fairgrounds. The center is open Monday-Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. Perry resident Curtis Fountain, a 15-year volunteer of the Red Cross and one of several volunteers at the school this week, said unity among fellow volunteers has never been better. “This is one of the most beautiful jobs of cooperation that I’ve ever seen,” said Fountain. Volunteers say money is still desperately needed, and that contributions are always encouraged. The Red Cross receives no government funding, instead relying specifically on the general public. Donations can be sent to the local chapter’s “Disaster Relief Fund”, in care of the American Red Cross, 346 Corder Rd., Warner Robins GA., 31088. Corporations wanting to make a donation can call 923-6332. IRS, from 1A Also, IRS regulations stipulate that no extension of time is available for business taxpayers to deposits withheld income taxes, social security taxes or excise taxes. However, because of the disaster area, if a company is unable to make timely deposits for payroll taxes or excise taxes, the penalty for late deposits may be waived. All affected taxpayers should write “Flood ‘94” on any return that relies on this relief. Individual taxpayers have an option to file a claim on flood losses by either amending their 1993 tax return or by claiming the loss on their 1994 tax return due on April 15, 1995. The IRS recommends that taxpayers wait and see which claim will be the most beneficial to them, because it depends on each individual’s tax situation. IRS employees are available at the FEMA disaster sites to assist taxpayers in making this decision. If an affected taxpayer is currently undergoing an examination or collection action, they need to contact the IRS and discuss their tax situation. Anyone who is contacted by the IRS should make sure the IRS is aware of their situation. For further information, call the IRS toll-free at 1 -800-829-1040), The Salvation Army in Bibb County has established a warehouse additionally serves as a central receiving warehouse for all areas of the state, processing, sorting, and shipping donations pouring in from all areas of the country. Other flood relief activities by United Way funded agencies include mobilization of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts as volunteers. Crisis Line is working with local counselors on serving the mental health needs of people affected by the disaster. The Family Counseling Center will work with staff and volunteers at service agencies, providing training in Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and the special psychological needs of survivors of disasters.
