You can't get to this place by an alternate route The old saying "You can't get there from here” has taken on new meaning during these past few weeks, hasn't it? Since the flood damage, bridges and roads have been closed, and detours have become the order of the day. People were being quite literal when they said you can't get there from here! Motorists have been forced to find alternate routes to their destina tions. At one time, people coming from Robins Air Force Base could get to Perry only by coming through Ft. Valley. Others have been forced to drive countless extra miles simply because one bridge or road was closed. Finding an alternate route has al most become a contest. People have begun to compare notes about secret routes they've discovered. The topic of conversation typically concerns what roads to take and how long it took. Finding an alter nate route has been likened to the exploration of the pioneers as they marched westward discovering new land. A Rehoboth group of volunteers, made up of 12-15 volunteers from Perry and the surrounding community, are working shifts to issue food to those in need because of the recent flood. Volunteers on duty Monday were: Eloise and Woody Rush, Sara Crook, and Elizabeth and Curtis Fountain, all of Perry; Ronald Sharpe of Macon, and his grandson, Ryan Lewis (son of Steve Lewis and grandson of the late Ira Lewis), W.D. Warren and Shirley Warren, Anita Hanselman and Sue Dixon, all of Warner Robins, and Virgil Booker of Fort Valley. Judy Allen and Willard Fish, both of Eastman, had rotated off their shift. This group started in Montezuma and worked there July 9-18. The Food Distribution point is centralized in Perry. Food is shipped out in big trucks to where it is needed. Curtis Fountain, volunteer, said that they are "expecting to go to Bainbridge or Moultrie, if needed. "This is the most beautiful example of co-operation between Southern Baptists and Red Cross. "This is a real good operation that has kept many a person from going hungry." Recycling This Paper A Small Gift To The Earth tßev. John I jjWaters j Although it has been very incon venient, we are fortunate that alter nate routes exist. They may require driving a few extra miles or leaving the house earlier, but with some creativity, it is still possible to get where you are going. The road to Heaven, however, has no alternate route. There is but one way to travel to Heaven, and no de tours are allowed. Many have tried a variety of routes and methods to gain entrance into Heaven, but they are soon disappointed when they discover their work has been in vain. Jesus Christ is the only route into Heaven's gates. No other route will take you there. If you are searching for an alternate route into Heaven, remember what Jesus said: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." A number of eateries still attract a loyal following, places where jacket and tie are commonplace and the menus haven’t changed in years-Amaud’s, Antoine’s, and Gautreau’s, to name a few. But a number of new dining spots now vie with the traditional ones. The Zagat Survey ranks The Grill Room (Windsor Court Hotel, 30 Grozier St., phone: 504-552- 1992) number one. Its $18.50 table d’hote menu at lunch is a steal, and a taster’s menu will send you waddling into the night for S7O a head. The menu changes frequently, with entrees $27-$45 and desserts from $8.50 Also, excellent, Mike’s on the Avenue (628 St. Charles Ave. in the Lafayette Hotel, phone: 504-523- 1709). Chef Mike Fennelly works his culinary magic on such entrees as crispy duck with aromatic spices and U-12 barbecue shrimp. Don’t miss the flash-fried, beer-battered Louisiana oysters with Mike’s green chili sauce. Entrees sl7-$24. If your flight isn’t full, fine-you needn’t worry or check-in at the gate to have your presence noted. But, if the flight is oversold or full, you do need to check-in, even if you had a boarding pass issued when you bought the ticket. Otherwise, the airline may assume you didn’t show and could give your seat away, and you may not be eligible for any compensation since there’s no way to prove you were at the airport within the airline’s check-in deadline (usually ten minutes for domestic flights). So if the flight looks full, don’t just site there. Carnival Summer Super Special 3 night Cruise on Fantastic Ecstasy out of Miami Friday through Monday. Starting at $249 per person.
