GLA is precious to human consumption
Evening primrose is a wild plant
with yellow flowers that open in
the evening. The seeds, which are
about as small as mustard seeds,
contain an oil that, like safflower
and sunflower oils, is a valuable
source of polyunsaturated fats,
which are just as vital to health as
vitamins and minerals. What
makes primrose oil exceptional
though, is that it’s the richest
source of an essential fatty acid,
gamma-linolenic acid (GLA, for
short). The only other substantial
sources of GLA are black currant
seed oil and mother’s milk.
GLA is precious because it
stimulates the body to manufacture
postiaglandin El (PGEI), a
hormone-like substance present in
every organ. It plays a key role in
round-the-clock function of these
organs and influences cell repair and
immunity.
Historically it was used by
American Indians to treat asthma
and wounds. Adopted by the
English colonists and sent back to
Britain, it became the “King Cure-
All”.
The body can manufacture GLA
from another essential fatty acid.
But several factors can and do block
that critical conversion of linoleic
acid to GLA and ultimately to
PGEI. One is a diet high in
saturated fats like butter and cream.
Margarine and other overly
processed vegetable oils, often
found in baked goods, also block
the process. So does drinking a
hefty amount of alcohol. Viral
infactions, cancer, a lack of insulin
(as in diabetes) or an inadequate
intake of zinc, magnesium or
vitamin B 6 also interfere with the
manufacture of GLA. Last, elderly
people cannot convert linoleic acid
to GLA.
Much of the research on the use
of primrose oil has been fostered
hand.
They met with Governor Zell
Miller and State Department of
Transportation officials to assess
the damage and review repair efforts
under way.
and carried out by David F.
Horrobin, MD PhD a British-born
Canadian doctor, formerly professor
at the University of Montreal and
now head of a research foundation
set up expressly to study GLA.
“It has been suggested that lack
of this key reaction may be a
critical factor in the aging process,
since it can explain many of the
changes which are characteristics of
aging, including damage to the
cardio vascular system, the
deterioration of the body’s defense
system and the susceptibility of
cancer,” says Dr. Horrobin.
Dr. Horrobin claims the evidence
is strong that primrose oil helps
circulating problems. “We have
found that people who have high
blood pressure or high cholesterol
start off taking four, six, or eight
capsules a day,” says Horrobin. “It
usually takes two to four months to
bring things down to normal.”
After that, they take half.
There is clear-cut evidence that
primrose oil is beneficial for
problems like allergic eczema, and
brittle, splitting fingernails.
Studies have shown that significant
improvements were made in adults
and children who had had allergic
eczema for six months or longer in
just three weeks of supplementing
their diets with evening primrose
oil capsules.
The few doctors who’ve studied
primrose oil usually recommend
four to eight capsules a day, half in
the morning and the rest at night.
