Educare celebrates first year with big attendance numbers EduCarc is celebrating one year of service to the Perry community. The interest and participation for the first year has been greater than was anticipated. A total of 4,453 persons have attended from Perry and the surrounding communities. The numbers however are not as important as arc lives touched. The name EduCarc was chosen becuase it best describes the service of providing care through education. All health care workers have experienced the frustration of witnessing illness, accidents, emergencies or deaths that could have been prevented. There is no way of knowing what difference was actually made in those 4,453 people. However, researchers report that just minor lifestyle changes can make a big difference in overall health. Since last July 532 people have attended weight loss classes, it only takes one person knowing CPR, First Aid or choking techniques to save a life, 874 people attended at least one of these. A.I.D.S. is a disease that is almost totally preventable 1,130 received AIDS or Infection Control information. A goal of the EduCare Department was to present education on the most common illnesses in our area. This was accomplished through screening, classes and luncheons. Overall 546 heard specific information on heart disease, cancer, diabetes or high blood pressure. The list goes on to include classes in Stress Management, Safe Sitters, Athletic Injuries, Health Careers and hopefully making a difference in the lives of persons attending. None of this would have been possible without the help and support of numerous individuals and groups in the Perry area. A list of some of the people assisting with EduCare would include: Malanie Elliot and Safe Kids of Houston County presenting programs to decrease number accidents among children; Peggy Bledsole of Extension Center who taught Weight Off Wisely, Diabetic Cooking and numerous other classes; Rose Reilly who taught AIDS; Vickie Aldernman who for July 30, at Central Baptist Church in Warner Robins. m The Continentals, a nationally known group of young singers, will present DREAMER, The Story of Joseph, at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, July 28 in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Perry. Most recently the women civic group Tahseria Club made a donation to EduCare. This will be used to purchase needed education equipment. The community has supported EduCare in numerous ways. EduCare was designed as a service to the Perry Community. It will never be known that might have occurred if it did not exist.
