Cheerleaders hold cheering clinic at PHS The Perry High School Panther cheerleading squad is taking applica tions for a cheerleading clinic Aug. 9-12. Elaine Stephens, cheerleading coach, said the clinic was open to all children K-8, and will cover dance, cheers, chants, build-ups (pyramids), safety techniques, fit ness and nutrition. Cost for the seminar is $25 per participants. Stephens said partici pants should wear comfortable clothes like shorts and shirts, tennis shoes and bring a cooler with ice and water. She said bare feet or san dals was not allowed. Registration forms can be picked up throughout town, said Stephens, or from any cheerleader. Partici pants can also register at the front desk at Perry High School. There will also be an open registration in the lobby Aug. 8 from 1-4 p.m. Football, from6A p.m., when Hornet players are sup posed to report to the dressing room. Jones said his players needed to have their practice cleats with them. Both coaches said that players had to have their physicals done be fore the start of practice. Roley, frcm6A offensive player should be out without a batting helmet. ... lack of institutional control. Parents raised several complaints about the lack of supervision from Parks and Recreation Director Ben Hamrick and other members of his staff of the program. Several par ents said that they did not see Ham rick at any of the games. These are serious charges. They point to a program in serious trou ble. However, it must be remembered that youth baseball and softball are not the only services that the Parks and Recreation Department offers. From what I can see, most of the other Park and Recreation offer ing run smoothly. I was not sports editor during football and baseball seasons, but Bill Overton, who was, had few complaints with the programs. The parks in the city look good, and there are a number of city parks. How many cities Perry's size offer fishing for all ages. Of course, the gem of the park program is going up at Rozar Park, the new community center. That building alone will do wonders for the Parks and Recreation Depart ment. Overall, it is hard to say that the Perry Parks and Recreation Depart ment is doing a bad job. That does not excuse the state of the base ball/softball program. However, we should balance our view, and remember from time to time that Parks and Recreation is more than the sport invented by Abner Doubleday. In most places, the rec department does a good job. ***** The Title IX compliance review conducted at Perry High School by the United States Department of Education will be completed some time towards the end of the week or the first of next week, said Roger Murphy, spokesman for the U.S. BOE. *** * * Can you believe it, football is starting this weekend!
