Board needs to reconsider
Dear Editor:
As campaigning gets under way for a new county commissioner, now
is the time for us to start taking a closer look at each of the candidates and
where they stand on issues that concern you.
We have seen recently how our Board of Education, when left to itself,
adopts the “Big Brother” policy so prevalent in our government today.
Their decision to put the two new middle schools on Highway 96 and
Feagin Mill Road was made in executive session. This violates the open
meeting statutes O.C.G.A. 50-14-3. They also contend that they have no
knowledge of who owns the surrounding property (i.e. Perdue, R.S. Byrd,
Taltons, and Davidsons to name a few).
Also, Mr. Loudermilk is supposed to be looking into purchasing land
for a new school in south Houston County. Why won’t the Board of
Education even acknowledge the land offer made by a private party? This
would cost taxpayers nothing, and the only requirement is the land must be
used as a school site as soon as possible.
These are a few prime examples of a Board of Education that has been
ignoring its constituents in the past, but they claim they want to work
closer in the future. Only time will tell.
This is why it is so important for you as voters to get more informed
on where the candidates stand, and then hold all our elected and appointed
officials accountable.
When our children’s future is at stake, we simple cannot sit back and
hope that their interests will be protected. We must watch, speak out,
listen, stay informed, remember, and most importantly, VOTE!!!

Spearman should do study
Dear Editor:
Mr. Spearman! How can you say you’re for the people of the Bth
District? You, Mr. Spearman, should have been doing your homework
like Mathis did. He’s already taken a stand to keep our military bases
open-even before he thought about running for Congress. You said in a
forum that the only way the deficit could be balanced was to cut military
and defense expenses. WE NEED A TIGHT AND POWERFUL
DEFENSE PROGRAM.
The people of Georgia should be proud of the clean campaign Mr.
Mathis has run. I have known the family for years. His dad worked very
hard to get where he is at-from driving a delivery truck for Sunbeam Bread
Co.—a D.J. in Warner Robins and Hawkinsville and news director in
Albany. His mother raised Craig and his three brothers to be good men. I
would vote for any of them. His step-father and mother started their own
business with virtually nothing and have succeeded. They do know how to
work and they do.not come with a mouthful of “GIMMIE” and a handful
of “MUCH OBLIGE!”
I think the voters of the Bth District did not fall of the turnip truck and
they will see right through you to the man of honesty, integrity, and
loyality; CRAIG MATHIS.
Sincerely,
Connie F. Pace,
Warner Robins
One voter without apathy
Dear Editor:
We have heard a lot about voter apathy in our area. However, there is
one gentleman in his late seventies who cannot be accused of that. He
walked from his home on Joe Louis Street to the Armory last Tuesday.
When he reached the Armory he learned that the voting site had been
changed to the Ag Center, so he walked out there (and arrived at the polls
with a smile on his face.)
Sincerely,
Sue Arnall
Candidates ran clean race
Dear Editor:
I am writing to congratulate Billy Hunter and Wayne Ragin on running
a good, clean, effective campaign. Both men conducted themselves
admirably.
I want to thank my friends and family for their support in my
campaign.
Please remember to vote on Tuesday, August 9. If you did not vote in
the Primary, you can still vote on August 9th.
Please vote.

Wylam has creative ideas
Dear Editor:
Next Tuesday, August 9, we will again go to the polls for the primary
runoff election. On the Republican side, Jack Wylam is a candidate for the
Post 3 seat on the County Commssion. I know Jack well; he sits beside
me every Wednesday and Sunday in our church choir.
We’ve talked about his candidacy and I am impressed that he not only
recognizes things that need to be done, but has a method for their
accomplishment. He also has ideas for the future that will move our
commission way beyond day-to-day business and into areas of innovative
planning for the benefit of everyone.
I strongly endorse Jack Wylam and his programs for the county and
urge others to look at his ideas and platform and see if they don’t agree that
he is the best man for the position.
Sincerely,
Bill Mize
Mathis has clean campaign
Dear Editor:

Ragin’s interests in doubt...
Dear Editor:
Wayne Ragin, candidate for County Commissioner, is asking the
citizens to accept and elect him as a public servant to represent all the
citizens. His motto is “Building Bridges.”
In line with his motto, “building bridges,” being in a managerial
position at Northrop, perhaps Mr. Ragin will explain to the citizens why
Northrop has not hired more of the dislocated workers from Continental
Can Co. and Heileman Brewing Co. Considering that taxpayers paid
approximately $3 million to install the infrastructure (roads, water lines,
sewage lines, and so forth) for new industry that is located in Houston
County, and Northrop has hired only three displaced workers, that is a very
valid question.
Perhaps Mr. Ragin’s motto, “building bridges,” stand for bringing
worker from California Northrop plant and firing local people. How many
local people have been fired due to replacing them with people from
California, Mr. Ragin?
If elected County Commissioner, who is Mr. Ragin going to represent,
the citizens of Houston County or his employer-Northrop. Considering
the amount of time he would be absent from his job, it is compensation.
Would that compensation constitute supporting measures (tax breaks for
industry) and the citizens having to make up the difference (increased
property taxes)? Being employed by a major corporation does raise
concerns as to who Mr. Ragin will serve, Northrop or the citizens.
Sincerely,
Edward G. Fisher, Elko
But candidate speaks out
Dear Editor:
As a candidate for the Houston County Commission Post 2, I felt it
was necessary for me to reply to the letter by Mr. Fisher* a resident of
Elko, jft was implied that I would forsake my responsibility to the citizens
of Houston County for the good of my employer Northrop Grumman.
This is not the case. First, I was brought up by very fair parents and I
am a Christian who sincerely believes in being true, fair, right and ethical.
I grew up in this community and many people know me and my family,
and therefore I owe a great deal to the community which raised me and
helped develop my moral character.
I also manage Employee Relations and my responsibility is to ensure
that all of our workers are treated fairly and with dignity and respect, in all
terms and conditions of employment. Further, I teach Ethics at Northrop
Grumman and feel that ethical behavior is the cornerstone of the values and
corporate culture which will ensure the survival ability of any corporation
or government entity seeking to reach their goals into the 21st century.
Just so that your readers will know, if there is a decision which will
exclusively affect the Northrop Grumman Corporation, I will abstain from
voting, if elected. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides training to
many of its public servants who have been elected to public service on the
proper conduct and ethics. I will represent all of Houston Countians well
if elected. I will represent Perry citizens fairly.
Sincerely,
Wayne Ragin
Democrat offers assistance
Dear Editor:
Clinchfield, Grovania, Henderson, Kathleen, Elberta, Bonaire,
Klondike, Lake Joy, Centerville, Hayneville, Perry and Warner Robins:
I would like to say, most people who work have employers. I don’t see
the difference between me and other candidates nor other public servants. I
am running for the Commissioner’s post because I genuinely care for my
community and because it is noble to serve and give back to the
community which raised you. Further, I graduated from Howard
University, worked for Senator Sam Nunn, County Government in
Memphis, Tn., Plizes Pharmaceutical in Nashville, Tn., and Philadelphia,
Pa., and relocated back to my home town.
In all of my responsibilities, not once has my ethical behavior been
questioned. Upon my return, to Houston County, I’ve worked with United
Way, American Cancer Society, Perry Recreation Dept., P.T.O. President
at Momingside, the Houston Mediation Program for Juvenile Court, as
well as hold down a full time job. Not once has my ethics or sincerity
been questioned.
l will continue to run a professional campaign for the Democratic
■ Nominee for Post 2. If you or anyone else would like to contact me, my
phone number is 987-6783, and I do return phone calls.
Sincerely,
Wayne Ragin Candidate
