Military technology helps fishermen Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are not new out of the wizard box of gadgets for the fishermen. GPS has been around for quiet sometime, being used in the mili tary as a means of navigation worldwide via the satellites of NAVSTAR. GPS technology is complicated and expensive, with a high price tag for some of the GPS units available to the fishermen. GPS works by computing the position of a receiver by measuring the receiver’s distance from satel lites orbiting in space. These satel lites are positioned so that trans missions from all five satellites can be received from any point on the globe. The GPS receiver is almost to tally automatic so they are being marketed as fairly simple to oper ate. You turn the receiver on, and it basically does the rest. The satellites will send the re ceiver the correct time, and updated schedule and satellite condition re ports. Knowing where the satellites will be, and knowing which one s to ignore because of problems, lets the computer in the receiver lock onto the satellites in the best posi tion to give the user the most accu rate position or fix. In order to do all of this, the re ceiver measures the distance from three satellites to get a two dimen sional fix, which is longitude and altitude. If something is wrong, such as obstacles blocking the Title IX, from 6A practiced from 5-6:30 p.m. at a different location. "The male team, therefore, has the benefit of a full-time and expe rienced coach for its entire practice session, which is one-and-a-half hours per day; however, the female team only has the benefit of a full time and experienced coach for one hour a day," reads the report. "We also found that the avail ability of the assistant softball coach was not comparable to the availability of the assistant baseball coach.... In an interview with the softball coach, she confirmed that she was not given an assistant coach until three-to-four weeks into the season. "We determined, therefore, that the availability of coaching person nel was not eauivalent for females. PHS, from 6A - as we are and with our numbers," said Stephens. Among the positions that Stephens is looking to fill is quarterback, where the Panthers lose Shawn Bass, who has pulled the trigger in the veer offense for several years. However, Stephens said the offense was in capable hands with Kiwaukee Thomas calling lining up behind center. "He is a very dedicated kid, and a hard worker. I don't think that it's really a matter of work or ability—it's getting the reps down and that only comes through experience.” Roley, from 6A first on Don Hoak's error. Hank Aaron broke up the no-hitter with a single, putting runners on first and second. Joe Adcock then put a Had dix pitch over the fence. Aaron stopped at third as Mantilla crossed the plate, costing Adcock the homer. Adcock was credited with a double. Don Larsen pitched the only per fect game in the World Series, working his magic in the 1956 Classic versus Brooklyn. By the way, Larsen retired from the game with only 81 wins, and Haddix retired with 136 wins. Several companies are marketing the GPS, either as handheld unit or contained in other electronics such as loran or liquid crystal graphs. Right now the hand held models can be bought from about S4OO up, and the integrated models run about S9OO plus. For the fisherman and sports man, the handheld type is most probably the best buy, although you may not get some of the "bells and whistles" that are offered in the permanent mounts. Don't run out and bury a GPS right away because, like any other new electronic gadgets, ihe price will come down a little as the new ness wears off. GPS units can be used to find, with a great amount of accuracy, the favorite fishing hole where you caught the winning limit. By plug ging in a little information that the unit asks and storing it in the memory, the receiver can show you "In order to correct the violation, the District agreed to provide com parable coaching personnel for the female tennis team during practice times effective the beginning of the 1994-95 school year. Additionally, the District agreed to provide the softball coach with an assistant who will be available for the entire softball season and for practices ef fective in the beginning of the 1994-95 school year." Editors note: the report came to the office on the afternoon of Tues day, Aug. 2, which was deadline day. Because of this, the response of Perry High School, the athletes involved, the parents and the Hous ton County Board of Education are unavailable. There will be a more complete story on the compliance review next week. Stephens said his two areas of concern were the secondary and the offensive line, noting that weakness in the secondary results in big plays for opponents weakness in the offensive line results in a bad running game or the quarterback getting sacked. k. In addition to fishing holes, you can also plug in waypoints and routes to get you there by using the automatic mode and following the position indicator. ROLEY Sports Editor Last year the Perry Panther soft ball team suffered through a one win season. Kelly Britsky, however, was a graduate assistant coach with La- Grange College, watching her team win a national championship on the N.A.I.A. level. Over the summer, Perry High School hired the Warner Robins native to bring her winning philosophy to the Panthers. Even though the Panthers suf fered through a dismal 1993 cam paign, 32 players showed up for the first day of practice. Britsky said that a few of her players were still out on family vacations. "Everything went good today," said Britsky. "I worked them hard.” She said that she had found some good athletes on the team. "There was a good attitude on the first day," said Britsky. "They came together real well, and seemed to get along real well." The first time that the Panthers will go public will be Aug. 22, when they host Jordan at Rozar Park. Until then, Britsky declared Panther practices closed. "I want the girls to focus on what we are doing, instead of focus ing on what is going on outside of the fence," said Britsky. "I would rather have practice time with me and worry about that (what is hap pening over the fence).'' Sinclair map, and it had some of the fish attractors marked and some well known fishing areas marked on the map with longitude and lati tudes, enabling the fisherman to en ter the information into the GPS receiver. How accurate are the maps? Some will actually show certain boat slips located in the marina for those who want their own naviga tion route back to the slip. GPS is fast becoming a means of navigation used throughout the world. You have already seen the pinpoint accuracy of the bombing missions during the Gulf War.
