Bj^E The Panthers are looking for senior Stan Gann to take charge If they are to repeat the successes they've had the past couple of years. Roley, from 9A p.m. at Rozar Park and his men's team practice at Barbara Calhoun Park from 5-6:30 p.m. Thrift would start the day at Rozar Park, watching the women's team practice from 4-5, or one hour, and end the day at Calhoun Park, watching the men’s team practice for their entire practice, or one-and-a-half hours, leaving the women's team with his wife for their final hour of practice. I say that singling out Thrift was unfortunate since he was obvi ously trying to divide his time be tween two teams. And, certainly the men's team, which was inexperi enced with most of its players see ing their first year of high school action, needed his attention more than the women's team, which had several experienced players back. I would certainly hope that Thrift receives an assistant coach for the upcoming year. Whether or not this was a problem, he does need another person to help him since there are often four matches going on at one time. The word that I have from sev eral people who spoke off the record is that the Panthers could have been hit much harder by the report than they were. The word I get, and it could very well be true, is that the hiring of Max Vickers as head Advaneem YOUR BATtm CONNECTION jj GUARANTEED! Both Vickers and Britsky have very good credentials, and should bring the softball and basketball programs up. Perry High School, to repeat, that was above most of the other schools in regards to women's ath letics before the report. If Perry fol lows through with the corrections it has promised to make, then the women's program should be strengthened all the much more. ***** With the baseball strike com ing up, I wanted to make a small comment. Let them strike! Who needs baseball? In just a few days the southern religion, football, kicks off. Already high school, college and professional teams are practicing. The pros have even played some exhibition games. Westfield and Perry have a lot of questions to answer, as both teams will be fielding young teams in terms of experience on the field. I thought the Panthers were hurt hard by graduation until Hornet head coach Ronnie Jones pointed out that only 11 players from last year's state runner-up squad will be return ing. Set 1334 BALL STREET 988-8122 Thomas watches team finish summer at 24-12 By VETO F. ROLEY Sports Editor After losing five starters from his team. Panther head man Carl Thomas knows that he is looking at a major rebuilding project if his team is to enjoy the success they have had the past two years, win ning the Region 3AAA regular sea son title twice, and the tournament title last year, when they were ranked as high as second in the state. Of course, losing so many starters means that spots for play ing time are also wide open. This summer, Thomas took his potential players to several camps, playing 36 games. Even though many of his potential starters were out for much of the summer participating in other activities, the Panther hopefuls finished the summer with a 24-12 mark. "We had some up and downs," said Thomas of the summer. "I was disappointed that some of the peo ple who needed to be here were, for some reason, not here." Neither team really knows what the upcoming season will bring. Not only will the new season be played with new personnel; but, there will be a new set of oppo nents. Perry will move down from AAA to AA. Westfield stays in the G.I.S.A. AAA classification, but moves from Region 3 to Region 1. As I said a lot of questions. There are also a lot of questions to be answered in the college and pro seasons as Ray Goff fights for his job, and June Jones takes over for Jerry Glanville. And, it should be fun for Georgia fans watching Eric Zier attack the Heisman fan. So, I will say it again, let them strike! Who needs base ball? Title IX, from 9A Thomas said that he was hesitant to say that the women's team would have the same number of official meets as the men's cross country team. "We don't have the numbers that we do in the boy's (cross coun try),'' he said. However, he added that he was expecting more runners for the team this year than last year. k* 60 Month Water Battery Pumps AWP f fbBB W B Each Exch. Each Exch. 9 .* 8attery...16.99 Each Exch. "We are not quite as far along as I would like to be," he said. "Our major accomplishment was that we were in the gym playing," said Thomas, who noted that the 24-12 record showed the Panthers had some talent to fill the holes left by graduation. "I was very disap pointed in some of the effort and at titude showed by several players." Thomas added that the summer did help develop some of his second string players, noting that the ab sence of several of his front-line players forced him to put the sec ond-line players into pressure situa tions. "I think that 1 will be able to look around and find someone (who can come off the bench for 8-16 minutes)," said Thomas. ’’Sometimes you turn a look at ev ery face on the bench, and then you look at the game. But, I can think A's, from 10A in the sixth. With one out, Solomon got his second extra base hit of the game, a double. He later scored on Ragin's single. Dry Branch completed its come back in the seventh after scoring two in the sixth. With one out, Band connected for a two run shot to tie the game. West took the loss for the A's, after taking over in relief for Ragin, who started, in the top of the eighth. Wednesday, August 10, 1994, Houston Times -Journal of 11 kids who can play." Finding enough playing time for everyone could be a problem, said Thomas, since it could hurt the continuity of the team. "I would rather have that problem," he said than the problem of not having any confidence in the players on the bench. "I'm satisfied to know that we can compete, to know that we have it in us to win," said Thomas. "I don't know how much it means to the kids. I would like to think they would have enough pride to be there." Thomas and the Panthers will find out quickly what kind of team they have when they travel to Jonesborough, Tenn., to participate in the Hardee's Classic to open the season Nov. 23-26.
