Although Hornet coach Billy
Sellers might not be happy with
his team's batting average after
Saturday’s tournament at Westfield,
he is happy with the record, with
his Hornets sweeping all three
games in the round robin
tournament.
The Hornets collected 40 hits in
three games, posting a .392
average. However, Sellers said that
he would like to have that average
at .500. Even though batting
average was lower than what he
expected, Sellers noted that his
batters made the clutch hit
throughout the tournament.
The Hornets opened the
tournament against Southland,
beating the Raiders 6-1.
Leading 3-0, the Hornets blew
the game open in the bottom of the
sixth. Jennifer Smith started the
inning with a single, going to
second on an error by the Raider
shortfielder. One out later, Smith
crossed the plate with the fourth

The 1993 Perry Panthers were
Region doormats, winning only
one game the entire year.
But in 1994, the Panthers
showed that they refused to wear the
name doormat anymore. Playing a
good AAA Jordan team, the
Panthers saved their best till last,
taking home their first win of the
season 4-3.
With two outs freshwoman
April Fendley stepped to the plate
with her team down by two runs.
Emily Mathis had started the inning
with a walk. One out later Robin
Griffen ripped a single back up the
box to put runners at first and sec
ond. Laura Coffee took Griffen's
place at first.
With the tying run on second,
and the winning run on first,
Fendley, who entered the game in
the fourth as a pinch hitter, stepped
to the plate. And delivered a line
drive over the right-centerfielder's
head. By the time the Jordan out
field could return the ball to the in
field, Coffee had crossed the plate
with the winning nin from first.
"April Fendley came through
with a clutch hit," said Kelly
Britsky. "She's going to be a major
player on this team.
"I'm real happy with this win.
We needed a little bit of confidence,
and this should do it. Jordan High
School is real good. They should be
a contender in AAA."
In addition to being the first win
of the season for her team, the win
was also Kelly's first "W" as a
coach. "It takes a little bit of the
load off my shoulders," she said.
However, it looked like Jordan
was prepared for a big day early.
The first three Jordan hitters rapped
base hits to left-center. Eva Roberts
got the game started for the visi
tors, with Leslie Coppedge getting
the second base knock.

A misplay in the Panther out
field allowed the runners to move to
second and third, where they scored
ahead of Beth Roberts single.
The barrage continued in the
second inning. Amanda Taft reached
on a single. An infield error put
Brittany Armstrong at first and sent
Taft to third. Beffie Jones then
grounded to short, but Taft crossed
the plate.

We were very nervous. There are a
lot of expectations about this team,
people are expecting a lot.
"But, we came through. We
could have gotten down real
quickly."
Eva Roberts came up in the sec
ond and ripped a single to center. It
would be the last baserunner Jordan
would have until the fifth inning,
and die last hit they would have un
til the sixth inning, as Perry pitcher
• Griffen set down 12 in a row, and
14 of the next 15.
Jordan would threaten in the top
of the sixth, getting back-to-back
singles by Beth Roberts and Kim
White with one out. However,
Griffen induced the second out to
short, and got the third out on a fly
to center.
After falling behind 2-0 in the
first, the Panthers came back in the
bottom half of the inning and got
one run back.
With two outs, Amber Fendley
and Marney Mills singled.
Stephanie Andel followed with a rip
up the middle. Fendley scored when
the Jordan center-fielder had hobbled
the ball.
The Panthers got their other run
on the evening in the fifth. Marina
Culley led the inning off with a
walk. Griffen singled to put runners
on the comer. One out later, April
Fendley, with her first at-bat of the
game, grounded to short, allowing
Culley to score.

them a chance to win the

However, it was a five run
second and a three run third that
gave Westfield the early advantage.
With one out in the second,
