Westfield students reported to school two days before Houston County students, on Wednesday. (HTJ photo by Jimmy Simpson) Perry teacher's belief brings school praise By JIMMY SIMPSON Staff Writer The belief that all students must be accepted for who they are, obviously paid off for Lula Wynn. Wynn, an eighth grade teacher at Perry Middle School, was recently honored as one of the top five finalists for "1995 System Teacher of the Year" in Houston County. A total of 27 teachers, one from each school, systemwide was nominated for the top award. Warner Robins Middle School teacher Kacy Jones took top honors. Wynn, who was required to submit a written documentation to judges during competition, stressed acceptance in the classroom as one of a teacher's most important rules. "A colleague of mine once said, 'A teacher must be able to laugh from the heart at humerous incidents and situations and especially at herself," Wynn said. "This statement exemplifies my idea of what makes an outstanding teacher. "True teaching from the heart coupled with knowledge produces lasting results. A teacher must accept students the way they are and love them for what they can become. Advance Auto Parts Bgj^^3S|BKl^W, mi //mm Offers You.»* • Oil Recycling . To generate student interest, the teacher must first show excitement about her subject matter." Wynn joined the Houston County School System in Perry in 1987. She began her eighth year at Perry Middle School last Friday when students returned to the classroom for the 1994-95 school year. T rEOPI F. Anderson went on after that to excel as an athlete in weight lifting. He set nine world records and 18 American records in weightlifting during the 1956 Olympics at Melbourne, Australia, as well as setting three Olympic records. He is the last American heavyweight to win an Olympic gold medal, and is still iisted in the Guinness Book of World Records for having lifted the most weight with his back, when in 1957 he lifted 6,270 pounds. Paul Anderson, once recognized as the strongest man in the world, died Monday, August 15 in a hospital in Vidalia, after a long struggle with kidney failure and arthritis at the age of 61. He had lived in Vidalia for many years where he had established a home for wayward boys. I remember Paul Anderson because of the opportunity to bump noses with him on the football field. I remember Paul Anderson for his many weightlifting accomplishments. But I remember Paul Anderson most for being the Christian man he was and for the many young lives he touched for Jesus over the years. And isn’t that really what life should be all about? 1334 BALL STREET 988-8122 Open Mon.-Sat 8 am - 9 pm • Open Sunday 10 am - 6 pm WWMtf mSM ■HH . In fact, more persons seek medical advice because of headaches than any other complaint. They can range from slight, annoying aches to severe and debilitating headaches. MosUy, the big problem with headaches is the Dr. John L Magac ill I confusion surrounding them. The confusion revolves around everything from what causes them to how to treat them. Even the names they have can be a matter of confusion; migraine headache, vascular cephalgia, occiputal neuralgia, and on and on. How does giving your headache a fancy name help it? It doesn’t. Usually, when someone seeks help, they’re given “environmental” reasons for their problem, “You’re under alot of stress”, “It’s your family situation”, “the long hours you’re working”, “all the coffee you drink”, “stop smoking”, “a chemical imbalance.” Unfortunately most headache sufferers aren’t getting the answers they need. That is: what is the cause and what is the cure? Today’s patient wants answers. Today’s patient wants more than a fancy label for his problem. He wants a reason. A bottle of pills and a pat on the back just aren’t enough. The latest research tells us that 95 percent of headaches are caused by nerve pressure. The nerves responsible are usually located in the neck. Many times the patient will even complain of neck discomfort along with the headache. These headaches can be mild or so severe that they are accompanied by nausea or dizziness. Hill makes Dean's List The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Georgia College has recognized Geoffrey Hugh Hill, by naming him to the Dean’s List for the Spring Quarter for maintaining a 4.0 grade point average.
